Lawmakers in both states will have to learn from missteps this year in order to be successful with expanding regulated online poker in 2025 and beyond.
LD 1777 in its current form would allow four tribes to offer online casino and poker, but two commercial casinos could not. The bill faces an uncertain future, considering the tribes just got a monopoly on mobile sports betting.
Last spring, DraftKings said it wouldn’t launch in the state in part because it’s a small market and the operator would get a small cut of revenue. Which goes to show, never say never.
Kentucky is days away from becoming the latest state to offer sports betting. Maine, Vermont, and North Carolina are expected to follow, and likely in that order. A Florida launch is also expected but remains tied up in court.
