PokerStars in the United States: The How, Where and When

Amaya thinks the Rational Group acquisition will “expedite entry” for the PokerStars and Full Tilt Brands into the US. But how likely is it, and how long will it take?

  • Most likely, the return of PokerStars into the US will take place in New Jersey. Crucially—and uniquely—New Jersey law does not specifically bar companies, personnel or assets that were involved in offering wagers within the US prior to its law being enacted.
  • Nevada has a “Bad Actor” clause that prevents companies, individuals and assets associated with offering online wagers in the US after December 31, 2006 from obtaining an interactive gaming license for a period of five years after the enactment of the law (February 21, 2013).
  • Other states are considering regulating online gambling, but the prevalence of Bad Actor clauses in online gaming bills such as those in California and Pennsylvania are presenting a rocky road for Rational Group.

41 $1 Million Buy-Ins Confirmed So Far for WSOP Big One for One Drop

The World Series of Poker charity event boasts a potential $20 million first place prize.

  • To date, a total of 41 players have been confirmed for the NLHE charity event leaving on 15 seats available. Organizers are optimistic that all 56 seats will be sold prior to the start of the event.
  • The main “Super Satellite” into the One Drop will take place on Saturday, June 28. The buy-in will be $25,300 with the eventual winner gaining entry into the $1 million NLHE tournament.
  • Action from Day 1 and Day 2 will air on ESPN on Tuesday, July 29, with the final table bubble being televised one week later on August 5.
  • The In-The-Money action will be televised Tuesday, August 12 with the winner being awarded a potential $20,000,000 prize at the end of the two-hour telecast.

Online Gaming Bill Formally Introduced in Pennsylvania Senate

Legislators in The Keystone State make their bid to regulate online poker.

  • Pennsylvania State Senator Edwin B. Erickson (R-Chester) formally introduced a bill to regulate online gaming.
  • The bill allows the state to enter into interactive gaming agreements with other US states and territories as along as only approved games are offered within the Commonwealth.
  • Included in the bill is a strong “Bad Actor” clause that distinguishes those operators that ceased offering online wagers within state borders after the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

PokerStars Receives License to Offer Blackjack and Roulette in Spain

Casino games at PokerStars could trial in Spain.

  • The Rational Group’s Spanish subsidiary REEL Spain, Plc has received licenses to offer Blackjack and Roulette from regulator DGOJ.
  • Since Full Tilt does not operate in the Spanish regulated market, it looks like PokerStars Spain could become the first PokerStars site in the company’s history to offer games other than poker.
