Can the Nevada Online Poker Market Support More Operators?

Online poker can be successful in Nevada, but there are limits on market size.

  • The news that 888 is planning to launch not only its own branded site in Nevada, but also another poker room for Treasure Island, raises the issue of whether the market can support the extra sites.
  • The 888-branded site and the Treasure Island skin will be sharing liquidity with the 888 powered WSOP Nevada. This can be expected to add traffic to some extent.
  • Establishing 888’s All American Poker Network (AAPN) as a well known brand may be part of a longer term strategy that will reap its own rewards as more states regulate online poker.

Mexico to Introduce New Bill to Regulate Online Poker on September 9

US players in Mexico will have to wait a few days more to discover whether they will have to move again.

  • Fernando Zárate Salgado President of Mexican Gaming Commission, has announced that a new gaming bill will be presented to the House of Representatives on September 9.
  • Online gambling, including online poker will be addressed in the new bill, but there are no specific details as to what the provisions will entail.
  • If the law passes as it was proposed, then significant restrictions could mean that the popular sites that many players frequent would no longer be available from Mexico causing players to uproot themselves once more.

Charity Poker Events Continue to Thrive in Michigan

161 charity poker tournament licenses have been issued since Governor Rick Snyder invoked emergency rules.

  • The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) announced last week that it has issued 161 “millionaire party” licenses for charitable poker events since emergency rules were implemented in July.
  • Millionaire parties are authorized poker tournaments which are held for the benefit of charities.
  • The current “emergency” rules for such licenses were approved by the Governor after litigation put an end to proposals to re-write the rules.
