The Zeitgeist
Key Takeaways
  • We are beginning to see an influx of “content geared toward steering US players away from patronizing offshore online poker sites.
  • A ruling last week by a Federal Appellate Court on Class II gaming offered by the Ho-Chunk tribe in the state of Wisconsin could have wide reaching implications for online poker in the US.
  • Much of the attention of online poker media outlets this week will be focused on PokerStars’ Spring Championship of Online Poker.

Offshore/Unregulated iGaming Operations

We are beginning to see an influx of content geared toward steering US players away from patronizing offshore online poker sites. There is also a movement to get readers to stop patronizing poker media sites that promote these unregulated igaming sites. There is even a call out to social media participants to get them to stop sharing content from these sites.

Oddly though, very little in the way of media from US regulated operators themselves that cautions players about the downfalls of playing on offshore sites has surfaced. While we do not expect to see this change in the near term, we do expect online poker affiliates that promote US regulated sites to continue to campaign against their offshore promoting competitors. We also would not be surprised if these competitors launched a campaign of their own touting the quality of their content.
