PokerStars has made changes to its multi-table tournament (MTT) leaderboards which reduce the monthly rewards while increasing the total payouts for the annual rankings.

The weekly, monthly and annual leaderboards hand out extra prize money to the best performing tournament players during a specific period. Leaderboard points are calculated according to an algorithm that takes into account several factors including the field size, buy-in and finish position.

From 12 Down to 3

The changes will not affect the weekly leaderboards, but the regular monthly leaderboards have been cancelled and will be replaced with a Summer only competition which runs for June, July and August—months where tournament entries are normally at their annual low point.

$100k a month in prizes will be given out in each of the three Summer months—that is more than the existing scheme hands out for the individual monthly leaderboards, but over $200k less when calculated over the whole year.

The annual leaderboard has been substantially enhanced and now offers $450k in prize money. The winner will get $35k in cash, free entries to the Sunday Million for the whole year, and other tournament entries bringing the prize value to over $50k.

Leaderboard Money Bubble

The number of players receiving prizes on the annual leaderboard has been increased to 100, although players ranked from 41 to 100 will receive only an entry to a $75k freeroll. Since 40th place pays $5,000 of major online series tickets as well as entry to the $75,000 freeroll, there is a significant money bubble which could see players scrambling for extra points as the competition draws to a close.

Added together, PokerStars will be giving away over $800k of value in prizes across the three leaderboard types.

The equivalent leaderboards for sit and go players—known as the Battle of the Planets—were recently cancelled completely.
