William Hill to Leave Brazil
Key Takeaways
  • William Hill has emailed its customers in Brazil to announce that they will no longer offer online betting and gaming services from December 23.
  • The decision may not be to do with regulatory issues in Brazil itself.
  • The UK Gaming Commission (UKGC) imposes a requirement that companies justify their operations in countries where they are not specifically licensed may provide the more pressing “regulatory reasons.”

William Hill has emailed its customers in Brazil to announce that they will no longer offer online betting and gaming services from December 23.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you; however this decision has been taken for regulatory reasons beyond our control,” explains the email.

The decision may not be to do with regulatory issues in Brazil itself. While online poker has been ruled a game of skill and exempt from anti-gambling laws, William Hill’s other online services are difficult to justify given Brazil’s existing laws.
