Ultimate Poker (UP), the first regulated online poker room in the US, announced over the weekend that it can now verify online poker players that have cellular plans with Verizon, Cricket and Virgin Mobile.

Stipulated by Nevada’s new online gaming regulations, Ultimate Poker has to enforce stringent checks on player verification to ensure the bettor is within state boundaries. This means both checks on the IP address as well as cellphone triangulation to ensure the legitimacy of the player.

One of the biggest bugbears of Ultimate Poker since launch—considered a “field test” both by the operator and the Nevada Gaming Commission—was that many cellular providers were not compatible with the triangulation service. This meant a large proportion of the Nevadan poker playing public—Verizon is the largest carrier in the United States—were excluded from the fun.

According to a report from a UP representative at the weekend, Verizon, Cricket Wireless, and Virgin, the latter of which is on the Sprint network, should now be supported by the service, meaning many more will be able to verify their accounts.
