Revenue from DFS operators in Pennsylvania grossed just under $2 million in May, according to data from the state Gaming Control Board (PGCB).

Month-over-month, fantasy sports revenue slipped slightly from April, when it was just north of $2 million. May 2021 was up nearly 9% from the $1.8 million recorded in May 2019. Those figures suggest the market is continuing to grow slowly, at a CAGR of 4.3%.

But May 2021 brought in the second-lowest monthly total in the last 10 months; only March 2021 came in lower at $1.8 million.

The market’s year-over-year calculation—guaranteed to be an aberration for at least the next two months as the market continues to lap the pandemic year—began to show signs of a return to normality. The year-over-year rate fell to 515.5%, down from a peak of 1,129% in April. Entry fees followed a similar year-over-year trajectory.

DraftKings and FanDuel continue to dominate the space. They also returned to a pattern seen during May of the two pre-pandemic years, with FanDuel briefly eclipsing its rival in terms of revenue and market share.

FanDuel grew its revenue and market share to $990k and 50.5%, up from $776k and 38% in April. It was the operator’s best performance in terms of revenue since January 2021, when it made about $1.2 million, and market share since May 2019, when it held 53.5%.

Meanwhile, DraftKings had revenue of $957k and a market share of 49%, down from $1.3 million and 62% in April. It was the first time the operator didn’t clear $1 million in monthly revenue since July 2020. DraftKings’ market share was its lowest since the 48% it held in June 2019.

PGCB data show that among the much smaller DFS operators, Yahoo reported $14k of revenue which accounted for 0.7% of the market. Both figures were up from the previous month, when Yahoo grossed $9k in revenue for a 0.5% share.
