Key Takeaways
  • It is still too early to get a clear picture of the Michigan fantasy market, which only opened in January 2020.
  • DraftKings and FanDuel are the only two licensed operators generating much revenue.
  • Between the two it is the former that leads the market.

Fantasy sports revenue in Michigan dipped month-over-month to $1.12 million in July, the lowest month of the summer. However, compared to the same month in July 2020, revenue is up 28%.

It is still too early to get a clear picture of the Michigan fantasy market, which only opened in January 2020. The coronavirus pandemic hit soon after, upending the sporting seasons. This makes annual comparisons close to meaningless; analysis month-over-month during the off-season also says little about overall health of operators.

Two things from the market data are clear: DraftKings and FanDuel are the only two licensed operators generating much revenue, and between the two it is the former that leads the market.

July was typical, with DK generating $614k in revenue, enough for a 55% market share. It has led the market in all 19 months since it opened, and its share has not dipped below 50% since the first month. FanDuel made up most of the remainder, generating $397k, enough for 35% of the market.

Of the remaining operators, FFPC stood out from the pack, generating $96k in revenue to claim an 8.5% market share. As a season-long fantasy football operator, it generates most of its revenue at the start of the season.
