A sharp rise in cash game traffic this week saw the global market gain 5.2%. Heavy winter promotions look to be the main driver of activity.

The gain is less impressive when looking at the 180 day graph below. Since the mid-November peak over two weeks ago, the seven day moving average increase for the global market adds up to just 1%.

Taking the graph back over the last three years and it becomes clear that cash game traffic is significantly weaker than in previous years for this stage of the market cycle. Total traffic is 17% below its levels of three years ago—despite the addition of poker rooms such as Adjarabet and the regulated New Jersey market which have added new markets to the traffic coverage.
