The current legislative session in Florida ends on Friday without ratification of the $3 billion compact between the state and the Seminole Tribe.
As a result, the expired compact from last year leaves several unresolved issues to the courts to decide such as the tribe offering blackjack and baccarat games. There is also the issue of $200 million in annual payments that the tribe had been making to the state.
A measure to partially decouple pari-mutuel racing from card rooms has been added to a bill in the senate at the eleventh hour. The issue is believed to have been one of the major reasons that efforts to approve the new compact were not successful.
Meanwhile, local lawmakers approved plans by the Daytona Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room to open a card room and sports bar. 150 new jobs averaging $41,000/year are expected to be created from the $5.6 million investment into the new card room.
