Ontario Online Casino Laws and Regulations

The regulation of online gambling in Ontario has been in the works for quite some time, following many years of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLGC) holding a complete monopoly over the local igaming markets.

In February, the iGO and AGCO announced that the launch of regulated online gambling in Ontario would take place on April 4, 2022, and the first Ontario internet gaming operator licenses were issued shortly thereafter.

Casino Taxes in Ontario

The decision to regulate online gambling markets in most parts of the world is based on the desire to protect consumers and generate tax revenue. Things are no different in Ontario, where the government set up a separate regulatory body to oversee and shape the industry.

iGaming Ontario (iGO), which enters into partnerships with online gambling operators, has not disclosed the terms of these agreements, including a revenue share component in lieu of a traditional tax model.
