Money Bubble Nears As WSOP Starts Day 4
Key Takeaways
  • The money bubble approaches as 666 players remain.
  • The last 648 players are guaranteed a minimum of $19k.
  • Maxx Coleman has the chip lead and is the only player with over a million chips.
  • 1,000 players went out yesterday, including Phil Ivey, but the Granddaddy of them all, Doyle Brunson, is still in, and he has a big stack.

After three grueling days, 666 players survive, and the WSOP Main Event money bubble draws near.

The last player out before the money—the “bubble boy” or gal—usually gets a consolation free entry to next year’s Main Event. The money starts at 648 remaining, so only 17 of the players left will go home empty handed.

As it sits right now, poker professionals Erik Seidel and Farzad Bonyadi are among the group still on the outside looking in, hoping to at least get that min-cash of over $19,000.

Day 3 shed over 1,000 players, including the vicious set-over-set elimination of Phil Ivey at the hands of Max Steinberg, but plenty of big names thrived en route to the cash. Three former WSOP Main Event champions are still in the field: Carlos Mortensen, Greg Merson and Doyle Brunson, the last of whom is sitting on a top 40 stack headed into Day 4.

WSOPE Main Event Champ Annette Obrestad is also still in the mix with a ton of chips, as are former November Niners Russel Thomas and Ivan Demidov.

Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi had been making headlines over the course of the first three days and he survived, as did his Day 1 tablemate Scott Freeman. Other names looking to make moves both before and after the money bubble include Matt Affleck, Christian Harder and bracelet winner Jake Cody, all of whom currently sit in the middle of the pack.

At the start of the day though, everyone is looking up at chipleader Maxx Coleman who, at the end of the day, is the only player to have reached the one million chip mark.

Play of the 44th Annual WSOP Main Event resumes at Midday PST, with chip counts and updates to be found on WSOP.com.
