888poker's "Big Bang Promotion" Targets Recreational Players in Key Markets
Key Takeaways
  • 888poker’s January Big Bang promotion looks to boost recreational player volumes.
  • it is not a rake race where the high volume high stakes players take all the top spots. Only the first 150 hands a day played at cash tables count towards points.
  • Points are awarded according to the ranking of a player’s hand if a pot is won post-flop, or goes to showdown. A Royal Flush earns 500 points, a flush earns 100 points, and so on.
  • The scoring methodology gives recreational players a chance to compete with the grinders.

Hot on the heels of making it to the number two spot in global cash game traffic rankings, 888poker’s January Big Bang promotion looks to boost recreational player volumes.

The promotion awards prizes to the top 450 point-scoring players from each geographical region. There will be three competitions for each of five regions: Russia, Canada, Germany, Australia, UK and International (for all other countries).

The winners also earn entry into a Big Bang Grand Final Leaderboard where the top 100 point-scorers will receive prizes. The top three will receive Sony PlayStation 4 games consoles.

What makes the promotion interesting is that it is not a rake race where the high-volume, high-stakes players take all the top spots: Only the first 150 hands a day played at cash tables count towards points. Points are awarded according to the ranking of a player’s hand if a pot is won post-flop or goes to showdown.

A Royal Flush earns 500 points, a pair earns 20 points, a flush earns 100 points, and so on. The scoring methodology gives recreational and low-volume players a chance to compete with the grinders: Once a player has put in 150 hands for the day, his or her leaderboard simply depends on the luck of what point scoring hands they were dealt.

The three competitions run from January 6 to 12, January 13 to 19, and January 20 to 26.

PokerStars’ December cash game milestone promotion added 20% to its traffic numbers; it will be interesting to see whether 888poker will see a similar boost which will further increase its lead over iPoker.
