In May 2011, “Ley de Regulacion del Juego” was fast-tracked through the legislative process and passed into law. The Spanish Gambling Act makes it illegal for unlicensed operators to offer online gambling to Spanish residents, and calls for the establishment of official online gambling regulations and licensing in the country: Paving the way for online poker in Spain in 2012.
Over fifty operators are through to have applied for a Spanish online gaming license, the deadline for which closed back in December 2011. Although the first licenses were expected to be issued by the beginning of 2012, delays stemming from political change in the country forced the schedule to be pushed back. The existing moratorium that permits unlicensed sites to continue operating in Spain temporarily has been extended until June 2012: or until the first licenses are issued.
