While it is the first regular charity event in New Jersey’s newly regulated market, charity events have become a staple of the big poker operators’ activities as the poker community responds to tragedies worldwide.

In June, PokerStars organized a “Race for Life” online tournament to benefit Cancer Research UK and more recently the Philippines Typhoon prompted a charity drive for Care International, where PokerStars accepted and matched donations via a dummy tournament. The Calvin Ayre Foundation also pledged up to $1m in matching donations to the efforts in the Philippines.
