- The final day of the WSOP Main Event will play down to the November Nine.
- Notable players remaining include: Carlos Mortensen, J.C. Tran, Rep Porter, Mark Newhouse, Amir Lehavot and David “Raptor” Benefield.
The final day of the WSOP Main Event is here and, by the time play ends tonight (or in the wee hours of tomorrow morning), we will know which nine players will be returning in November to play for the $8 million+ first place prize and the coveted Main Event Championship bracelet.
When Day 6 started there were 68 looking to survive. But unfortunately not everyone can do so—as we saw the notable eliminations of Brett Richey, Noah Schwartz, Vitaly Lunkin, Jonathan Jaffe and, finally, late into the evening, Jackie Glazier, who was the last woman standing when she bowed out in 31st place, unable to win what would be her final race situation.
With yesterday’s 41 eliminations, 27 will return to play down to the final nine. Perhaps there is no bigger star left in the field than 3-time World Poker Tour Champ and 2001 WSOP Main Event Bracelet Winner Carlos Mortensen.
“The Matador” has been steadily accumulating each day, always somewhere in the middle or in the bottom of the chip counts, but now the former and would-be champ currently sits in 6th position, returning with roughly 100 big blinds.
Of course, 2-time bracelet winner J.C. Tran has his eye on a WSOP Main Event Championship to go along with his WPT title as well. The well-known pro currently sits in 4th place, right behind chip leader Anton Morgenstern, France’s Sylvain Loosli and New York native Chris Lindh. All of these players return to Day 7 incredibly deep-stacked to start the day, all hoping to fend off those who are looking for a double. Yevgeniy Timoshenko is looking for just that. Timoshenko, the WPT Champ who is often referred to by his popular screen name “Jovial Gent” on PokerStars, had a whipsaw Day 6 and while once sitting in the pole position, currently sits in the bottom half of the leaderboard with just over five million in chips.
Also, hanging on is 2012 Final Table participant Steve Gee. The 58-year-old continues his amazing back-to-back run by making it to Day 7 once again. He is hoping that history will repeat itself, in so much that he can turn his current three million in chips into a ticket to the November 9.
Also set to return are Rep Porter, Mark Newhouse, Amir Lehavot and David “Raptor” Benefield. Benefield, the one-time professional online poker player who stepped away from playing the game full time back in 2009, has some work to do as he is currently the tournament short stack, set to return with roughly 10 big blinds.
