The Best Online Poker Sites in Michigan

There are three online poker rooms in Michigan: PokerStars, BetMGM Poker and WSOP. All three are good choices, but there’s pros and cons of each. If you’re looking start playing online poker, or if you’re a seasoned player looking for a new site, this guide is here to help you choose.

Michigan Online Poker Sites at a Glance

  • PokerStars has the most cash games and tournaments, because it connects its Michigan and NJ player pools into one combined network. It has a fantastic welcome offer for new players.
  • BetMGM Poker is strong alternative to PokerStars. It doesn’t have the same amount of traffic, but you’ll find a good spread of games during peak hours. The welcome bonus is the best in the market.
  • WSOP MI is a great pick for regular daily and weekly tournaments, you can qualify for the WSOP live series, plus there are even official bracelets you can win online.

PokerStars: Our #1 Pick in Michigan — Great Games, Tournaments and Promotions

PokerStars LogoIf you are just starting with online poker, PokerStars MI is our top recommendation. The welcome package is perfect for new players, giving you $150 worth of free play after playing a single cash game hand. It’s a fantastic way to experience the online poker product with very little of your own money at risk.

PokerStars also offers some of the cheapest cash game tables and tournaments you will find anywhere. The ring game action starts as low as $0.01/$0.02, while you will find tournaments and sit and goes with buy-ins well under $1. So its perfect if you’re just trying out online poker for the first time.

Of course, the site is an excellent pick for experienced players as well, as there is plenty of action across all stakes. Because its player pool is connected to New Jersey, it has by far the best selection of cash games. For tournament players, PokerStars MI features a rich schedule of daily and weekly events combined with regular series featuring big guaranteed prize pools.

Traffic matters — and it’s why PokerStars is our top pick. It is the only site that combines Michigan and New Jersey player pools, which means you get to play more tournaments with bigger guarantees and access way more cash games. It really puts PokerStars apart from the competition and is why it’s the best choice for most players.

PokerStars offers state-of-the-art software equally fitting for recreational and serious players, and its mobile app is also world-class.

All together, PokerStars ticks every box, and we rank it high in every category. For that reason, it is our first choice for all player types. While BetMGM’s bonus might be bigger, and WSOP has the brand and prestige of the World Series, you’ll likely find the best action on PokerStars.

BetMGM Poker MI: Top Choice for Grinders, Biggest Sign Up Bonus

BetMGM Poker LogoBetMGM offers quality action on its cash game tables and provides a solid tournament schedule of its own.

BetMGM Poker MI signup bonus is best-in-class — offering up to $75 in MTT tickets after the initial deposit and the generous 100% deposit bonus of up to $1000 on the first real money deposit. It also has very good clearance terms, meaning that you’ll earn the bonus much faster than at competitor’s welcome bonuses. If you’ve got a big bankroll, BetMGM’s welcome bonus is the quickest way to grow it.

While it does not offer the same player numbers or variety as PokerStars, BetMGM manages to hold its own with interesting MTT series and decent cash game traffic. Players looking for additional value will find plenty here, as some tournaments, especially the bigger buy-in ones, have been known to feature overlays.

While MTTs at BetMGM Poker feature smaller fields and prize pools, the competition in these events also tends to be softer. They also do not take as long to complete. With smaller fields comes lower variance, allowing you to move up the stake ladder quicker and increase those important numbers.

Pick BetMGM if you want the best welcome bonus in Michigan. You get $75 in tournament tickets just for signing up, and the deposit match is up to $1000. With fast clearance terms, this is the best in the state. BetMGM does have the same games of PokerStars, but if you like free money, there’s no reason not to also play on BetMGM just to claim the welcome offer.

BetMGM Poker also features some very valuable promotions focused on the players who put in constant volume, allowing you to rake up hundreds worth of rakeback every single week, which is particularly appealing to those who prefer cash games over tournaments.

WSOP MI: Best for Competitive MTT Players

WSOP LogoWSOP Michigan doesn’t have the traffic as its competitors, but it is our recommendation if you want to play official WSOP events. It also has a huge welcome bonus that works well for both new and serious online poker players.

WSOP has a rich schedule of daily and weekly tournaments. The operator also features regular events and series where you can win WSOP bracelets and WSOP Circuit rings, all playing from your home computer or even phone. These tournaments usually have higher buy-ins, costing from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand, so they are best suited for players who already have a solid bankroll and some experience. Plus, no other poker site in Michigan gives you the opportunity to win WSOP gold bracelets.

WSOP has the biggest headline bonus in Michigan, encompassing a deposit match up to $1000, free play money money up to $100, and freeroll tickets. It is the biggest value of any bonus in the state. The deposit match clears quite slowly, so just make sure you can put in the volume if you want to max it out.

WSOP Michigan is the only site that has official satellites to the Main Event. While WSOP isn’t our top pick because it doesn’t have the volume of games, it is the only site that has official satellites to WSOP events. It also runs official bracelet events online. So you should pick WSOP if you fancy your chances at the world’s biggest and most prestigious live event.

While WSOP Michigan is an attractive option for tournament players, it also offers solid cash game action. The new software is also very smooth and provides a quality gaming experience for players of all shapes and sizes.

It is also worth noting that the operator is generous with its frequent bonuses, promotions, and freerolls, giving players a chance to get their hands on a lot of extra value. True grinders will certainly find plenty of reason to play here and put in the required volume to unlock all these extra funds. We recommend PokerStars for new and casual players, but WSOP is a good choice — certainly for those interested in tournaments.

Other Potential Sites to Launch in Michigan

Run It Once Poker MI

Run It Once Poker US Powered by BetRiversRun It Once Poker, powered by BetRivers, could be the next big poker site to launch in Michigan. Parent company Rush Street Interactive has partnered up with Phil Galfond, a well-known poker professional, to bring the cult-favorite RIO platform to the US market.

While there is no official information about where Run It Once poker will launch first, it is a fair assumption that the operator will seize the opportunity and get into several markets as quickly as possible. Michigan represents an ideal starting point for this as it is now a part of the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA), which means RIO could combine its player pools with operations in other MSIGA states, namely NJ, NV, and DE.

It also remains to be seen what features RIO Poker MI will offer to its players. Rush Street Interactive will use Galfond’s platform that used to cater to the ROW players before shutting down, which means an integrated HUD, the popular Splash the Pot promo, dynamic avatars, and many more of its innovative features} could all find their place on the new Michigan platform. We also expect some exciting changes to the platform as well.

Best MI Online Poker Bonuses

MI poker players have a good selection of welcome bonuses available to them.

It is hard to say which site offers the best bonus overall, as a lot of it boils down to what exactly each player is looking for.

For example, PokerStars’ welcome package gives players $150 worth of free play after playing a single cash game hand. There is also a more traditional 100% bonus up to $600 geared toward more serious players.

BetMGM Poker MI offers a 100% deposit match up to $1000, making the promotion attractive to serious grinders. You can also get up to $75 in MTT tickets, but those depositing a smaller amount will receive only $10 worth of tickets, making the bonus less appealing to recreational players with smaller budgets.

WSOP MI offers new players joining the site to get up to $100 in free cash when they make a real money deposit of $10 or more. As for the deposit match bonus, it is as good as BetMGM’s, as it goes up to the maximum of $1000.

Operator Deposit Match Extra Perks
BetMGM Poker MI 100% up to $1000 Up to $75 in MTT tickets
WSOP MI 100% up to $1000 Up to $100 in extra funds
PokerStars MI 100% up to $600 Or up to $150 in free play

Welcome Bonuses

The most common type of online poker bonuses, welcome offers, are geared towards new players and are generally the most generous of all the promotions you will come across.

As a part of the welcome bonus, the operator will match the player’s deposit in full and sometimes even give you a bonus amount that exceeds the deposited sum. So, for example, if you deposit $200 with an MI poker room as a new player, you can expect to receive at least another $200 in bonus funds.

Sometimes, the bonus package will include additional perks like a small no-deposit bonus to try the room or some extra tournament tickets and freeroll entries on top of the cash match.

When it comes to cash bonuses, these are not added directly to your balance. Instead, they are locked away in your bonus account and released in increments as you play and generate rake. For example, a $200 bonus might be split into ten $20 increments, each one released when you generate a certain amount of rake or earn a certain number of points (which are different ways of tracking the same thing).

Reload Bonuses

While new players may get the best benefits at MI poker rooms, existing customers also have plenty to look forward to. Sites like PokerStars MI and WSOP Mi frequently issue reload bonuses, giving you a chance to easily claim some extra funds on your next deposit.

These bonuses are very similar to welcome offers, with the biggest difference being they are not limited to new players. The maximum amount is usually somewhat smaller, although some of the best MI reload bonuses go as high as $500.

Various Leaderboards

No matter what format of online poker you might enjoy, there are always some leaderboards and competitions happening at MI online poker sites that will match your preferences.

These leaderboards tend to award the players who put in the biggest volume during a certain period, playing qualifying games, but some of them also take results into account, so the most skillful players who also play a lot will reap the biggest rewards.

You will find leaderboards for MTTs, sit and goes, cash games, and many subtypes, and the best way to get value from these promotions is to get involved with the ones featuring your favorite format and put in some serious volume.

Loyalty Programs (VIP Schemes)

Finally, for the players who play a lot, loyalty programs at different poker sites can significantly improve their bottom line. These are generally designed to reward the players who play the most and generate the most rake, although there are many differences between the operators.

Finding the right loyalty program for your style and volume of play is very important. If you can do so successfully, you can expect some serious regular returns on top of your winnings at the tables.

How to Download Online Poker Site Apps & Software

Provided you are physically within MI state borders, players should have no problems downloading the relevant software to your device. For the most part, the procedure does not differ from that of downloading any software.

First of all, visit the website of the operator you want to play with — either PokerStars MI, BetMGM Poker MI, or WSOP MI.

If you are playing from a desktop computer, find the download link or button on the site, click on it, and follow the procedure. Usually, it will only take a few clicks and a couple of minutes before the platform is up and running on your device.

For those wanting to play on their phones, you will need to download the relevant app, i.e. Android or iOS, which can also be done via the operator’s website or the relevant app store.

You may have to allow files from unknown locations when prompted by your phone. After a few seconds, you will download the .apk file. Run it, let the installation process complete, and you will be good to go.

Once you have downloaded the software, if you have not completed the registration before, you will be able to do so from the platform or app interface. It is important to note that you will not be able to access any functionalities of the software before you are fully registered and logged in.

MI Poker Tournament Series

Michigan is home to three major poker operators, and all three of these try to cater to tournament players in the state in their own way. Depending on the type of player you are and what you are looking for, you might prefer one poker room over the other, but you are almost certain to find a good fit at one of them.

PokerStars MI Tournaments

PokerStars MI is arguably the leader when it comes to real money online poker tournaments in Michigan. This comes as no surprise, seeing how PokerStars primarily built its reputation on a global scale, hosting some of the largest online events in the world.

With PokerStars combining its NJ and MI player pools, the operator has started using a different name — PokerStars US — instead of state-specific ones. With larger player pools, these tournaments have become even more attractive, offering more action and bigger prize pools. Iconic tournament series now include USCOOP — which falls into the PokerStars Championship of Online Poker branding.

Other than this, PokerStars MI has frequently hosted other, smaller series, such as the Fall Fest and the Winter Series.

WSOP MI Tournaments

WSOP Michigan has captured its fair share of the online tournament action in Michigan, focusing on its biggest advantage over the competition — the ability to award prestigious WSOP bracelets.

WSOP MI has regularly hosted online bracelet series, usually taking place simultaneously with the live iteration of the World Series in Las Vegas (June and July). Michigan poker players have a shot at over half a dozen bracelets every year, and we expect that number will increase with time, especially if WSOP combines its MI player pool with that of New Jersey and Nevada.

Players on the site also get to enjoy several online circuit events every year, where they have a chance to compete for large prize pools and WSOP rings — again, something that only this operator can offer in the US.

Beyond this, WSOP MI has also kept its finger on the market’s pulse, trying to cater to players’ expectations. The operator was the first to bring the increasingly popular Mystery Bounty format to the US.

BetMGM Poker MI Tournaments

BetMGM Poker MI is the smallest of the three operators in terms of player traffic, making it hard to organize big tournaments and promise large guarantees. However, they have emerged as a differential of sorts for the players looking for smaller, more manageable fields and softer competition.

The operator does not have such a fixed schedule for its big series, so it is somewhat harder for the players to plan ahead. Its major events seem to be concentrated around holidays, as we saw with the Winter Poker Championship.

Michigan Online Poker Cash Games

Tournaments are just one side of online poker in Michigan. Players have access to a wide range of cash game options across all regulated sites as well.

In terms of stakes, games are available as low as $0.01/$0.02, making them accessible to everyone, regardless of what their bankrolls might be. On the other side of the spectrum, those looking to play for big money can find stakes as high as $100/$200 and even more at heads up tables.

When it comes to available games, No-Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha are available across the board. Those looking for more exotic variations can turn to PokerStars MI, where they will find options like 8-game, Stud, Razz, 2-7 Triple Draw, and even Badugi.

PokerStars MI remains the leader in terms of player traffic by quite a significant margin, followed by BetMGM Poker MI, and WSOP MI.

Michigan Traffic History

At any one time, around 300 to 400 cash game players will be sat playing real money online poker on Michigan online poker sites.

Note that that’s an average across 24 hours — there’s two to three times that during peak periods (evenings and weekends) than less than half that during off-peak hours. There’s also more action in the sprint and summer months, with things a bit quieter in the fall.

Around 60% of all Michigan action will take place on PokerStars’ site, because it combines its player pool with New Jersey. On PokerStars you’re going to get by far the biggest selection of games and opponents, with even niche cash game variants running during peak times, and common NL Hold’em games running around the clock at a variety of stakes.

Around 80 to 100 cash game players are active, on average, at BetMGM, which is enough for popular formats to run around the clock at lower stakes. High stakes games, and less common formats, might only be available during peak times.

WSOP has the lowest traffic at cash games, hovering at around 40 to 50 average concurrent players. You’ll need to play during peak windows if you want to get a couple of games going at your preferred format and stakes. WSOP is predominantly a tournament site, so there’s a lot more action there than at ring games.

Below, you can see average concurrent cash game seats each month across all three sites.

MI Online Poker Laws and Regulation

In Michigan, like other regulated states, all poker operators have to adhere to strict laws and regulations regarding who can play on their sites and under what circumstances.

The first and most important point is that MI online poker is available to only those 21 years or older. All players are required to provide their SSN and relevant documents to confirm their age and identity.

You can register and start playing by providing your personal information, like full name, date of birth, address, and SSN. The software will cross-reference this information with the national database; if everything checks out, you can play.

However, when requesting your first withdrawal, you will also need to provide a photo of your government-issued ID. This is a one-time process; if everything checks out, you can deposit and withdraw in the future without any further complications.

Geolocation Checks in Michigan

At this point in time, all players who want to play on any sites offering legal online poker in Michigan must be physically present in the state.

The system does not work on a trust basis, i.e. you confirm you are in the state. Instead, there is geolocation software that you will have to allow to access your device to check your IP and other information. Only if the software can verify your physical presence in the state will you be able to play.

It is very hard to fool this system, and even if you are able to do it, it is not recommended. If any player is discovered to have played from an area outside of Michigan, they will have their funds confiscated, and they could potentially face even more serious ramifications.

It is important to note that you only have to be physically present in Michigan to actually place real money wagers or bets of any kind (poker, casino, or sports). You can register for an account and verify your identity from any US state as long as the operator allows it. Players only have to be in MI when actively playing real money games or tournaments.

Online Poker Sites Safety and Fairness

Michigan Gaming Control Board MI Regulator LogoThe biggest thing setting legal online poker US operators apart from unlicensed offshore sites is the fact the former are fully licensed and operate under a very strict set of laws.

To make sure you are actually playing on a regulated site in Michigan, scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the logo of the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). If the site is licensed, it will clearly display the logo so that players know they are on a safe and regulated platform.

Of course, it is easy enough for anyone to slap any logo they want on their site. If you have any doubts, visit the MGCB official site and check out the licensing information. Type in the name of the operator you want to check, and if they are licensed, they will appear in the search results.

One of the most important requirements set forth by the MGCB is that all licensed operators must maintain a money reserve at all times in the amount that is enough to secure all the funds in the players’ accounts. Although this is technically not the same thing as segregated funds, it achieves the same purpose.

All players’ balances are covered at all times using one of several methods (cash, letter of credit, bond), so whatever happens, your money is safe.

If you feel like an operator has done something to violate your rights as a player or has not treated you fairly, you have a right to lodge a complaint. However, it is very important to follow the procedure here.

The first point of action is filing a written complaint with the operator. The operator must provide you with a written answer within 10 days. If you are not satisfied with the outcome, you can proceed to pursue the matter with the MGCB.

You can submit your complaint via an online form, but the MGCB will require you to include the answer you received from the operator. It will not take any action until you had first tried to resolve your issue with the casino, sportsbook, or poker room directly. If the player and the operator cannot come to a resolution, the MGCB will get involved and make the final decision.

Banking Options for Players in Michigan

Michigan poker players have access to a fair number of banking options. Most importantly, all these methods are completely safe and reliable, so you don’t have to worry about your personal information getting into the wrong hands or your money not reaching its intended destination.

As for the available options, this is one of those things that always change and develop, so if you do not see an option that works for you, this does not mean that it will not be added at some point in the future.

When it comes to banking, more is almost always better, as the more options there are, the easier it gets for everyone to fund their poker account in the most suitable and convenient manner.

Popular Online Poker Payment Methods in MI

While different MI poker sites support different methods, a majority of the operators recommended on our site will feature payment options listed below:

Method Deposits Withdrawals
Wire Transfers
Cash at the Cage

PokerStars MI, BetMGM MI, WSOP MI also enable deposits and withdrawals at their land-based casino partner. This is a very convenient and safe method if you happen to live nearby the casino or visit the area often.

Like in other states, credit and debit cards should not be your first choice. While these are perfectly legal options on any regulated poker site, banks seem slow to get the memo.

Many financial institutions in the US still block transactions to gambling sites, even the licensed ones. This should change in the future, but if you have other options, try them first. Credit cards are also not the best option as they only work one way — you can deposit with them, but you will need to use a different method to cash out.

Expectations for Interstate Shared Liquidity in Michigan

Both players and operators in the States are looking forward to regulated poker sites combining their liquidity, bringing together player pools from different states. At this point in time, there is one such agreement — the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA) — between New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware, and Michigan, which joined MSIGA in May 2022.

This development was prefaced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer signing SB 91 bill into law on December 29, 2020, paving the way for future multi-state online poker agreements.

PokerStars MI became the first operator the Mitten State to take advantage of this new development. On January 1, 2023, the room created its first interstate network, joining forces with PokerStars NJ. This new compact allows players from the two states to compete at the same cash game tables and in the same tournaments across both clients.

In April of 2022, Michigan was accepted into the MSIGA with regulators from the original three states (NE, DE, and NJ) approving the application.

This was the first major development in interstate poker ever since New Jersey joined forces with Nevada and Delaware in 2017.

PokerStars became the first operator to take advantage of Michigan joining the MSIGA. After doing the preparatory work, the operator received the blessing from the state regulator and became the first MI online poker site to combine player pools across the state border.

PokerStars MI merged player pools with PokerStars NJ on Jan 1, 2023, a move that was important for players in both states, but more so for residents of New Jersey as it significantly boosted the active player pool they have access to. Thanks to its new combined NJ-MI platform, PokerStars has seen its traffic soar in the months since.

While PokerStars may have been the first, it surely won’t be the last. While both operators have been fairly tight-lipped about their plans or timeline, we fully expect BetMGM to link up its NJ & MI player pools soon. WSOP is also surely planning to connect its MI platform to its existing tri-state network, including WSOP NJ, WSOP NV, and the 888-powered racinos in Delaware.

Michigan Online Poker History

All online poker operators in the state have to be licensed by the MGCB (Michigan Gaming Control Board). In April 2022, Michigan joined MSIGA, an interstate compact allowing poker operators to combine players with other states in the agreement.

Online poker finally went live in Michigan on January 29, 2021. The first site to offer legal real money online poker games in the state was PokerStars MI, which received all the necessary clearances from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).

Two months later, this was followed by the second market entrant, BetMGM MI Poker, which launched on March 22, 2021.

The latest operator to join the regulated MI market was WSOP MI, which dealt its first real money online poker hand on March 28, 2022.

The law legalizing online gambling and sports betting in Michigan was passed in December 2019, but it took a full year before the first sites were ready to accept players.

The twelve-odd months were spent figuring out all the details of licensing and setting up rules for the operators for the future. It was a fairly long wait, but residents of Michigan can now play online poker in a fully legal and regulated environment.

Land-based Casinos, Poker Rooms, and Sportsbooks in Michigan

Michigan is a great state for those who prefer to play in a live environment or love having some options. There is no shortage of live options for poker, casino gambling, or sports betting. These are the top legal venues operating in the state.

What is the best online poker site in Michigan?

All three sites are great options. For most players, we recommend PokerStars, because of its welcome bonus, great cash games, and huge tournament schedule. However, BetMGM is good for high volume players, and WSOP has the brand and cache of online bracelets which will appear to some.

Do I have to be physically present in Michigan to play online poker?

All players must be physically present within Michigan state borders to legally play online poker for real money. All licensed operators use geolocation software solutions to ensure all of their active players comply with this requirement at all times. Whether on a desktop computer, laptop, or mobile device, you can only play on MI poker sites if you are actually in Michigan.

Are there any Michigan online poker interstate operators?

Yes. In May 2022, Michigan entered the MSIGA, allowing operators in the state to start sharing liquidity with the other three states in the compact (DE, NV, and NJ).

PokerStars became the first operator to take advantage of this development, merging its Michigan player pool with that in New Jersey. Since January 1, 2023, players on PokerStars NJ and PokerStars MI can play together in a single combined player pool, having access to the same cash game tables and tournaments.

Are MI online poker rooms safe?

Yes. Sites offering legal online poker in Michigan are safe to play on. The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is in charge of vetting and licensing all online poker operators in the state. To receive a license, the operator must meet stringent requirements that guarantee the safety of the players and their funds and ensure the fairness and randomness of the games on offer.

Unlike offshore sites catering to US players, these licensed operators are culpable to the Michigan state regulator. If there are any problems or disputes, the MGCB will act as an intermediary and consider any player complaints to determine if any rules or procedures were broken.

Are MI online poker rooms rigged?

No, online poker games in Michigan are not rigged. The MGCB oversees and regulates all online gambling operations in the state, including online poker.

The MGCB sets strict rules and regulations that online casinos, sportsbooks, and poker rooms must follow to ensure fair and honest gameplay for players. These rules include regular audits of their games and software, strict security measures to protect player information, and measures to prevent fraud and cheating.
