Poker Podcast Reviews

This week, a couple of the poker podcasts that had been notably absent over the last month reappeared offering new content. Since I knew I was going to spend some extended periods of time driving this week, I downloaded my selections and hit the road.

First up was The Tournament Poker Edge podcast. The description they publish isn’t … well, very descriptive. Beyond announcing their guest strategy analysts and that they will be reviewing some hands, there is nothing in the description to entice someone unfamiliar with their show or even a selective listener of poker podcasts to choose their offering over that of another show. I think they are doing themselves a disservice by not proving more details about the hands they discuss because their content is really good.

Having listened to a lot of shows butcher hand reviews, I have to say, these guys do a good job of providing all the information available to make street by street decisions. I also like that there are several people offering opinions on the decisions and not just one person reading the hand and another person providing analysis. Their format leads to some good discussion among their knowledgeable panel. Even though I don’t play many tournaments these days, I hope their release schedule becomes more consistent because I pick up handy tips from just following along.

It was nice to see the 2+2 Pokercast back on the schedule after a week off. Their guest this week was high-stakes mixed game player Matt Glantz who seems to be making the rounds lately to talk about his most recent blog post. It wasn’t that I found that topic particularly interesting, but rather it is Matt’s perspective that I find refreshing. For anyone that hasn’t heard him before, check him out.

The segment with Steve Day was particularly interesting this week. Aside for the usual promotional talk, I found it interesting to get a PokerStars insider perspective on the recent meetings they hosted with a panel of player representatives. Though he didn’t reveal any earth shattering information, for me just hearing him talk about it was like asking a player at the table “How much you got?” You know the answer but just hearing him tell you can provide additional insight.

I also sampled The Final Table Poker Radio Show on my drive. Their guest this week was Matt Savage. Matt provided his views on tournament poker including structures, rulings and all the things you’d expect from the Tournament Director extraordinaire. There was nothing really new from Matt, but if you haven’t heard him before he is definitely worth a listen.

The show as a whole seems to be geared towards the casual live player. Dennis and Paul are never afraid to provide an opinion, but I find myself not putting much credence in them and I am not sure why. This week I found their discussion of reentry tournaments very interesting. I had no previous thoughts on the pros or cons of the newest trend in tournament poker. In fact I had very little knowledge on the topic at all. It was great to learn more about the subject, but as usual some of their reasoning didn’t resonate with me.

The show I would have liked to listen to but didn’t is Filthy Limper. Looking at their description (hint hint TPE) I noticed they were discussing the business of Poker Coaching. I enjoy new topics that aren’t discussed to death on other shows and look forward to hearing this one.

So, after running out of poker podcasts on my drive and not wanting to surf behind the wheel, I found myself with nothing to listen to. Or so I thought. Buried on my phone was an episode that I had downloaded during the holidays but skipped after it started off with over five minutes of ads. I was desperate so I skipped past the ads and listened to episode 12 of Filthy Limper.

Thanks guys for getting me home without having to endure the awful FM stations in my market. The guys interviewed an owner of an underground poker club in Connecticut. Having no previous experience with these clubs, I found it fascinating. It’s an excellent listen.

That’s all for this week. As usual, feel free to leave your own reviews, rip on mine, or suggest other podcasts for my listening pleasure.
