A follow-up season to the runaway successful Game of Gold seems very much in the cards, a GGPoker spokesperson has told pokerfuse.
Since its debut on November 10, the series has garnered immense popularity. With five episodes already aired and seven more to come, the grand finale is set for December 4, 2023.
Each episode has consistently achieved six-figure views on YouTube, with the premiere amassing 300k views.
While filming for the second season has not commenced, indications suggest it may be in the planning stages. Spunky Hwang, GGPoker Creative Director, Producer & Director of Game of Gold, in an exclusive to pokerfuse, has confirmed ongoing discussions about a new season, hinting at a more intense experience with additional unknown elements.
Hwang stated, “Yes, we are in talks about filming a new season, which will be a lot more intense with more uncertainties ahead.”
“We are very happy to hear that the community is enjoying the content as much as we enjoyed filming it. It was incredibly entertaining to watch all these players zoned in and giving their all to stay alive during the shoot,” Hwang, the force behind Game of Gold, added.

GGPoker’s Unexpected Poker After Dark: Game of Gold

When GGPoker teased that “something big is coming,” many anticipated the revelation related to a new major promotion or an upcoming online poker tournament series. To the surprise of many, the unveiled Poker After Dark: Game of Gold was an entirely different and unexpected announcement.
Since the debut of this new reality poker show on the internet, it has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from poker professionals and recreational players. Social media networks have become a hub to discuss the developments soon after each episode has gone live, with five available now on the GGPoker’s YouTube channel.
It may very well be perceived as the Big Brother of poker, given that the show doesn’t solely focus on the poker action, unlike all high-stakes cash game formats throughout the years. Yet, it includes a line-up of well-known and seasoned poker pros such as Jason Koon, Daniel “Jungleman” Cates, and Daniel Negreanu alongside newcomers Lukas Robinson, Kyna England, and Kevin Martin. The latter is certainly used to reality TV, as Martin participated in and won Big Brother Canada in 2017.
“Game of Gold was honestly the best experience of my life,” said 26-year-old British poker player and streamer Robinson to pokerfuse. “To play on a poker reality TV show with some of my biggest idols growing up, like Dnegs and Fedor Holz was insane.”
“If I am honest, because I was the most inexperienced player, I felt so nervous during the whole show. I think my lack of experience in playing under the cameras really showed in my plays. But I was proud with how I just kept being myself, and I tried to remain positive and focused throughout the show,” Robinson shared.
“An experience of a lifetime, that I will never ever forget! I just want to thank GGPoker and all the staff that worked on the show for giving me this opportunity and for allowing me to be part of one of the greatest ever poker TV shows,” he added.
The episodes have aired thrice weekly since early November, and the sixteen contenders will be whittled down one by one in each episode, with the grand finale scheduled for December 4, 2023.
Only one of the participants will walk away with $456,000, but each poker player will gain more popularity throughout the poker community thanks to this unique plot line.
One of the biggest challenges for GGPoker and the producers is on the horizon: What will happen after season one? The demand for more can certainly be felt on social media, as poker enthusiasts from near and far are sweating, analyzing, and discussing the outcome.
What Would Season 2 of Game of Gold Look Like?
GGPoker will continue to innovate and take on the challenge of making great, entertaining poker content for both the community and the general public to enjoy in order to grow the game of poker worldwide.
GGPoker is no stranger to innovative features for its global online poker client, and the same can be said about Game of Gold so far as well. The first season was filmed one year ago in a studio in South Korea, and the planning for more content is already in advanced stages, as confirmed by Hwang.

Perhaps the new leading global operator can even use the positive feedback within the poker community to their advantage and get poker fans involved in making future episodes. Voting on game formats or adding cast members through social media seems quite possible. Even a spin-off focusing on the World Series of Poker is not too far-fetched.
The show’s success so far can be attributed to the fact that it goes beyond just the poker action. Each respective team sweating the action at the table and showing their immediate thoughts makes it more appealing to the casual viewers, who can all resonate with these emotions.

Most other poker formats focused solely on high-stakes action and setting new record numbers on streams. That can get dull after a while and reduces the potential widespread appeal to the niche poker bubble only, whereas mainstream media may very well pick up the reality TV part.
The original Poker After Dark became popular thanks to the big names involved and the friendly banter between them, bringing something new and exciting to televised poker. Twelve years ago, in 2011, the PokerStars Big Game came to life in which a loose cannon was pitted against five mostly professional poker players, but the show was cut short after just two seasons. However, new content was filmed during the recent return of the North American Poker Tour (NAPT) and ten new episodes are set to be aired in 2024.
It is an exciting time for fans of the card game from all over the world, as poker in a tv-format receives an urgently needed and long overdue revival.
