The Borgata/partypoker Garden State Super Series (GSSS) got off to a strong start on Sunday, with all six events exceeding their guarantees.

The biggest prize pool of the day was the “high” tier of Event 1, a 6-max NL hold’em tournament with a $200 buyin and a guaranteed prize pool of $75,000. In total 417 players played, making for a total prize pool of over $77k.

Every event of the GSSS runs in three tiers—low, medium and high. The medium level of Event 1, a $50 buyin with a $15k guarantee, proved to be the most popular, with 438 players joining to make a prize pool of almost $20k. The $10 low level Event 1 attracted almost 400 players and a prize pool of over $3000.

GSSS is the largest tournament series ever attempted in the US regulated market, with 20 events and 60 tournaments spread across two weeks and a total of $1 million guaranteed in prize money.

Early signs point to a well-constructed schedule, with an even spread of players across each tier and guarantees comfortably, but not excessively, met.

Participation in Event 2, a NLH full ring frezeout, was slightly lower, but guarantees were all still hit. The $100 highroller comfortably went $6k over its $25k guarantee, the $50 mid-tier attracted just enough to go over the $15k mark, and the micro-buyin $20 went $200 over its $5k guarantee.

There’ll be one event a day for the next three days, when two niche events—7 card stud and PLO 8—join a NL rebuy event for a bumper on Thursday. Two big NL tournaments on Friday and Saturday will act as good warm-ups for the headlining event of the series—the NLH Main Event on Sunday, September 14.
