PokerStars announced Wednesday that the 2014 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) will feature a Main Event prize pool of $10 million guaranteed.
In total, the events will combine for an overall guaranteed prize pool of $40,000,000.
Although the official schedule and event listings have yet to be released, PokerStars did upload a promotional video to inform players about the marquee series, which will take place sometime following the 2014 WSOP.
The PokerStars WCOOP has been one of the largest online poker tournament series available worldwide since its inception in 2002 and, along with its spring sibling SCOOP, is the biggest online tourney series on the planet.
Last year’s WCOOP featured 66 events during the month of September; culminating with the $8 million guaranteed Main Event that exceeded $10,000,000 by the time registration closed and was won by “PlayinWasted” for $1,493,499.
WCOOP tournaments have historically had buy-ins ranging from $100+9 to $5,000+200 with a heavy dose of No Limit Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and Mixed Games.
The WCOOP guarantee matches last May’s SCOOP, which was heralded as the richest tournament series ever.
The series also had $40 million guaranteed, although the spring championship has many more events than WCOOP. This year boasted 135 events with a spread of low, medium and high buy-in tournaments.
Despite the record-breaking guarantees, the figure was easily surpassed—every event smashed its guarantee and over $80 million was ultimately awarded in prizes.
