The $2 Million Crazy Freeroll Series on WPT Global (WPTG) proved to be so overwhelmingly popular that the operator was ultimately forced to temporarily suspend the promotion.
Originally, the series was scheduled to run until October 5, but WPTG has now put it on hold. The operator attributes this interruption to “unprecedented participation,” which caused its servers to overload and crash.
However, the series has not been canceled outright. Instead, WPT Global has confirmed that the promotion will return on October 1. During this pause, the operator will perform a full upgrade of its server infrastructure to ensure the platform can handle the surge in players.
“Due to the unprecedented participation and enthusiasm from our community, our servers have become overloaded,” the operator stated on its social media channels. “In order to provide all players with the best possible experience, the Crazy Freeroll promotion will be temporarily paused starting today while we perform a full upgrade of our server infrastructure. Crazy Freerolls will return on October 1st.”
The operator further clarified that all points and rewards earned up to this point will remain valid. In addition, when the promotion resumes, all players will automatically receive free entry into a Sunday $100,000 Super Crazy Freeroll, with no additional requirements needed.

How Crazy Freeroll Promotion Worked
The Crazy Freeroll Series initially launched on August 18 and was designed to run for 45 consecutive days. Every day during this period, WPTG would host freerolls with a guaranteed prize pool of at least $10,000. On Sundays, the operator would run Super Crazy Freerolls with a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool, of which $20,000 was reserved for the winner.
The freerolls were accessible to both new and existing players. Each player received four free tickets to the Daily $10,000 Crazy Freeroll. Additional tickets could be obtained through various methods: by playing in free-to-enter satellites, which awarded seats to the daily events; by wagering at least $10 in a given week to earn five extra tickets for the following week; or by inviting friends to join via the referral program.
Entry to the $100,000 Super Crazy Freeroll required players to meet certain criteria. One method was to finish in the top 20 of any Daily $10,000 Crazy Freeroll. Another was to rank among the top 500 on the Friends Group Leaderboard. A third option involved achieving specific weekly wagering thresholds across Global Spins, multi-table tournament buy-ins, or other verticals such as casino games or sports betting.
Unsurprisingly, the promotion was an immediate success. The first $100,000 Super Crazy Freeroll, called the Hyper EuroStar and held on August 23, attracted 1,229 entries and paid out the full prize pool in just over two hours. The champion walked away with $20,000, the runner-up earned $13,326, and the third-place finisher collected $7,293. In total, more than 300 players cashed, with payouts starting at $68.
Popularity Brings Problems
Large-scale freerolls of this kind are extremely rare in modern online poker. While freerolls still exist, few operators provide them at the level and scope offered by WPT Global. Indeed, a fully dedicated freeroll series with millions in guarantees stands out as a true anomaly. Freerolls still remain one of the best ways for players to build a bankroll, especially for those unwilling to risk much of their own money.
Nevertheless, the overwhelming response created problems for the site. On at least two occasions, the site’s servers buckled under the weight of demand. On August 28, the platform briefly experienced technical difficulties, leaving players unable to log in. In response, the operator paused all tournaments until the issue was fixed about half an hour later.
A similar but more severe issue occurred on Sunday, August 31. This time, the outage was widespread. Many players were unable to log in at all, while those already logged in were disconnected. Others experienced lags and crashes. Once again, WPTG had to pause tournaments, including the $100,000 Super Crazy Freeroll. The games eventually resumed after a delay of a couple of hours.
After these disruptions occurred on two separate occasions, WPTG concluded that the Crazy Freeroll Series could not continue under its current server capacity. As a result, the promotion was paused until the operator completes its infrastructure upgrade.
In the meantime, all of the room’s regular offerings, including daily tournaments and cash games, continue to run without disruption.
The $2 million Crazy Freeroll Series is scheduled to return on October 1.
