GGPoker’s Ocean KO has burst out of the gates with a record first week. The $5 Ocean KO Opener amassed 420,084 entries across multiple starting flights, the largest paid-entry tournament tally ever recorded online by combined entries. The haul easily cleared its $1 million guarantee and set a new benchmark for the format on the world’s biggest online poker network.

The operator credited the response to pent-up curiosity around randomized bounties and the series spotlight. It also called the turnout the biggest tournament in its history by entries. Ocean KO is GGPoker’s take on the jackpot PKO, a progressive knockout with random multipliers on every bounty.

Unlike a standard MTT, the final prize money in a jackpot PKO depends on how the multipliers hit during play. GGPoker collected $1,932,386 in buy-ins for the opener, but the actual payouts will be higher or lower based on the randomness of the bounties awarded. That is the core appeal and the controversy of the format.

Jackpot PKOs have deep roots in France. Winamax invented the concept with Space KO in 2024. Betclic followed with Smash KO earlier this year. GGPoker is the first to scale it globally. A recent Winamax event showed the ceiling, when a €100 Space KO with an €80k guarantee paid out more than €1 million thanks to a single giant bounty.

Ocean KO’s first week also reignited comparisons with world record claims. Media pointed to PokerStars’ 2015 one cent Common Cents Kick-Off that drew 253,698 entries as the Guinness mark. Ocean KO’s number is bigger, but it came from many flights and has not been registered with Guinness. It still reads as a watershed for a paid-entry event at a meaningful buy-in.

For players new to the idea, a jackpot PKO keeps the familiar PKO split. Half the buy-in seeds a starting bounty on every player. Knock someone out and a random multiplier is applied to that player’s bounty, then the result is split 50 or 50 between instant cash and boosting the winner’s own bounty. GGPoker’s Ocean KO ranges from 0.4x to 400x on early levels, with special legendary tiers flattening the payout once a bounty crosses $10,000.

Ocean KO is also the most top heavy implementation yet. GGPoker increased the frequency of 10x hits and added a rare 400x, while inserting extra sub 1x results that make small hits more common. It creates more viral moments and larger bounty targets, but also bigger swings.

The first week confirmed demand. On its debut Sunday, the $10, $100 and $1,000 Ocean KOs cleared guarantees with more than 30,000 combined entries. That early momentum culminated in the $5 flighted opener’s record haul. The operator said the community set a new bar for engagement with a fresh twist on a favorite format.

Regulars raised immediate concerns. Some worry the heightened variance diminishes the role of skill relative to the rake in the long run. Others highlight potential edge cases around table integrity when a single seat holds a bounty worth many buy-ins. Those questions will persist, but commercial results in France and now globally suggest the format fills a clear entertainment niche.

What Ocean KO changes at the table

Ocean KO keeps bounties live from the first hand. That makes every pot with a short stack carrying a big bounty uniquely valuable. Stack coverage and seat position matter even more than in a regular PKO. One 100x can turn a $5 starting bounty into a $255 target in a $10 event within minutes. That shifts ranges, incentives and table dynamics immediately.

The pay table also concentrates value at the top. More than 70 percent of knockouts pay less than face value on GGPoker’s spread. The shortfall is offset by occasional 10x or 100x hits, and the ultra rare 400x. In a large field, those mid and top tier multipliers show up routinely. Compounding can happen when an already grown bounty lands another big multiplier.

Legendary levels cap extreme outliers. Once a bounty exceeds $10,000 and at least 50 times the buy-in, the game switches to flatter multipliers. That reins in the most explosive hits while preserving drama. The quirk is that the single biggest theoretical knockout sits just below the legendary threshold, where a 400x is still live.

The format’s design is purpose built for streaming and social clips. Big multipliers create shareable moments without waiting for a final table. That is a key reason operators like the structure. It also draws a casual audience that might not otherwise grind deep MTT runs.

Expect more operators to pilot jackpot PKO inspired formats in the next 12 to 18 months. The format aligns with streaming era poker and delivers exciting moments early and often. GGPoker’s first week numbers will accelerate those plans.

The near term focus is on whether Ocean KO sustains momentum after the series. If Sunday flagships and regular schedules keep filling, the format will cement a permanent slot alongside PKOs and mystery bounties. GGPoker’s calendar over the next few Sundays will provide the clearest signal.
