Not the news Ontario poker players were hoping for. Those waiting for PokerStars’ long-anticipated return to the province will need to remain patient a little longer, as the launch of its new platform has been postponed once again.
In a post published on its Ontario X account today, PokerStars announced that the scheduled launch of PokerStars on FanDuel Ontario would not go ahead as planned. The operator said it would share further updates as soon as more information becomes available.
The latest setback marks another delay in what has become a much longer migration process than initially expected.
PokerStars completed a similar transition in the US market earlier this year, launching PokerStars Exclusively on FanDuel on April 1. Ontario was originally expected to follow shortly afterward, with the new platform slated to go live in early May.
However, as May arrived, the operator informed players that additional time was needed before launch. After several weeks, PokerStars eventually confirmed June 3 as the target date for the Ontario rollout.
That date has now come and gone without a launch.
The exact reason behind the latest postponement remains unclear. It could be related to technical preparations, regulatory approvals, compliance requirements, or a combination of factors. Whatever the cause, loyal PokerStars players have now been offline far longer than originally anticipated.
Meanwhile, rival operators have continued to operate without interruption. The prolonged absence of PokerStars has likely benefited competitors, particularly GGPoker Ontario, which currently holds the position as the province’s largest online poker operator.
The good news for players is that this delay does not appear likely to stretch on for weeks.
Responding to questions from players on social media, PokerStars indicated that the launch is still expected to happen soon. When one user asked whether the delay would last a couple of days or drag on much longer, the operator suggested it was the former, saying it expects the postponement to be measured in “days not weeks.”
In another exchange, the operator hinted at the reason behind the setback, noting that delays are sometimes an unavoidable risk with regulated market launches and referencing “regulator/legal/compliance approvals” as a factor.
While the comments do not provide a definitive explanation, they suggest that regulatory and compliance processes may be playing at least some role in the delay.
What to Expect from FanDuel Poker in Ontario?
Although today’s launch did not materialize, all indications point to the delay being relatively short. Based on PokerStars’ responses to players, the new FanDuel Poker Ontario is still expected to arrive within days rather than weeks.
Once it does launch, Ontario players will be greeted by a substantially different poker experience under the PokerStars on FanDuel brand.
The new platform will not run on PokerStars’ proprietary software. Instead, it will use Playtech’s iPoker software, meaning the look, feel, and functionality will differ significantly from the PokerStars client that Ontario online poker players have used since the market launched, though the branding will still be there.
Players can expect changes across virtually every part of the platform, including tournament lobbies, table layouts, gameplay presentation, rewards mechanics, and the overall user interface.
PokerStars on FanDuel Ontario has already outlined several launch promotions before its launch date. Among them is the No Sweat Series, a promotional freeroll campaign that will distribute hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of tournament tickets.
The operator has also announced a new lineup of flagship Sunday tournaments under the FanDuel Poker brand. Events such as the Sunday Dynasty and Sunday Shield are expected to help deliver approximately C$100,000 in guaranteed prize money during launch weekend.
In addition, welcome offers will be available to all players, regardless of whether they previously held an account on PokerStars Ontario, FanDuel Casino, or both. Players will also gain access to a new rewards program known as Dynasty Builder.
At present, GGPoker remains the clear market leader in Ontario. However, FanDuel Poker’s recent performance in the US demonstrated that the brand can quickly gain traction. Following its relaunch south of the border, the platform rapidly climbed to the top position, surpassing WSOP Online in both traffic and revenue.
For that reason, FanDuel Poker is expected to take an aggressive approach in Ontario as well. Its arrival should provide a meaningful challenge to GGPoker and add another strong competitor to the online poker landscape in Canada’s largest regulated market.
