iGaming and online poker is currently still illegal in California, despite efforts to move to a legalized and regulated industry within the sunshine state.
Back in early 2017 lawmakers in California introduced legislation that would legalize online poker in the state. Unfortunately due to in-fighting within the state between indigenous tribes and land-based card rooms about how best to run and manage a regulated online poker industry—which has rumbled on for years— a stale mate remains with no progress made to passing the legislation and non likely for 2018. With around 70 tribal casino and 80 card rooms in the state of California it requires much debate and agreement to be able to move any online poker provision forward.
However, with Pennsylvania coming online in the latter part of 2018 hopefully it will re-stoke the fire for legalization to be bought back to the table.
If California were ever to come online it would be game changing for the US online poker industry as a whole, as the state has around 40 million people — which would inject much needed life blood into the online poker eco-system.
