Playground Poker Club in Montreal, which was awarded the title of the World’s Best Poker Room at the 2024 GPI Awards, recently paid out a massive bad beat jackpot, courtesy of two players holding a straight flush in a casual $1/$2 cash game hand.
The jackpot was awarded on January 22, just as the WPT Winter Festival started at the Playground Poker Club, setting the tone for a successful poker bonanza that ensued.
This was the second time a huge bad beat jackpot had been awarded at the room in just a few months, as a similar straight flush over straight flush scenario awarded a C$1.6 million jackpot back in October.
With the latest payout, Playground continued its tradition of awarding some of the biggest bad beat jackpots anywhere in the world, including the record-breaking C$2.5 million jackpot paid out back in August 2023.

A Lucky Loser Wins Over C$300k
It’s not every day that you are dealt a straight flush with two hole cards in a No Limit Hold’em game, and whenever you are, you fully expect to win the hand.
This was not the case for one Playground Poker Club regular, whose 4h5h ended up losing the hand to Th9h, on a board that ran out AdKh7h6h8h. Both players had a straight flush, and the main pot went to the other player, named Tsz.
However, no one cared much about the pot once the cards were turned over, as the straight flush over straight flush scenario triggered the room’s famous bad beat jackpot, which stood at C$758,785 at the time.
The loser of the hand would end up winning 40% of the total amount, worth C$303,514, while his opponent got one-half of that amount, representing 20% of the overall jackpot. Another 20% was distributed among the other players at the table, while all other active players in the room got their fair share of the remaining 20%.
The celebrations included all visitors of the Playground Poker Club, as champagne was served all around, and the games continued late into the night.
The bad beat jackpot counter restarted to C$150,000 following the payout, while the Omaha Bad Beat Jackpot remained at an impressive C$736,635, giving PLO players a chance to play for a similar jackpot in the coming weeks.
The World Series of Poker is Coming to Montreal
Over the years, Playground Poker Club has established itself as one of the best places to play poker in Canada, and the recent recognition it received at the GPI awards further proves the club’s international acclaim.
The prestigious club will once again host the World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) Montreal festival this March, with events starting on March 23 and running until April 7.
During that period, Playground Poker Club will run a variety of WSOPC-branded events, with buy-ins ranging from $400 to $5,000, and the C$1,675 WSOPC Main Event being the highlight of the entire show.
Online satellites for WSOPC Montreal are already running at GGPoker and GGPoker Ontario, giving players from across Canada and the rest of the world a chance to qualify for the event for just a fraction of the price.
Satellite events with the Target Stack structure offer opportunities to qualify for as little as $1, with C$2,500 WSOPC packages up for grabs on a weekly basis.
