One of the most appealing aspects of poker is its unique ability to create the most extraordinary and surprising of stories. From players turning a few bucks into millions to the rollercoaster of raw emotions we get to witness at big final tables, this game just seems to have it all.
Even if we forget for a moment, a quick reminder is never far away. One such reminder occurred at the UKPL Blackpool Main Event, a live tournament powered by 888poker, which saw an 83-year-old lady take down the whole thing.
You’ve read that right. Lilian Welch is somewhat of a regular at Grosvenor Casino in Blackpool, who simply enjoys the game. She’s been hitting the tables for well over a decade, and that persistence has now paid off big time, as her triumph brought her a very nice payday of £31,390.
Lilian’s Time to Shine
The UK Poker League is quite a popular live series with stops all over the country. Buy-ins are such that they make the series accessible to many recreational players who, like Welch, primarily want to have some fun at the tables without busting the bank.
The Blackpool Main Event came with a £560 price of admission and ended up attracting a rather respectable field of 318 entries, resulting in a prize pool of just over £150k. Among those few hundred were some admirable names, including 888poker’s ambassador Ian Simpson, who managed to make it past the bubble.
However, it was Lilian Welch who captured the attention of the poker media present at the venue and the hearts of everyone watching on the live and virtual rail. She found her way to the final table and then proceeded to outlast six players. She was the one to strike the final blow to Paul Orritt, who bowed out in fourth place.
At this point, the three remaining players decided to make an ICM deal, which guaranteed Lilian, the chip leader at the time, £23,890. But, there was still over £7,000 to play for, as well as the trophy, so the cards went back in the air.
Welch first made short work of Brian Clarke, whose pocket queens couldn’t hold up against Lilian’s big slick. She then proceeded to take down her last opponent in Frankie Mok, when her KQ managed to out-run Mok’s A9.
With that, at 83 years, Lilian Welch locked up the biggest single result of her poker career, picking up a grand total of £31,390 for her extraordinary run in the UKPL Blackpool Main Event.
For the Love of the Game
Welch was very modest in her winner’s interview, explaining that she simply loves to play poker and results are of secondary importance. She admitted that she often doesn’t even know how much she’s about to receive when she busts a tournament in the money.
That’s not something we hear every day from poker players in 2026. In the age where most players are laser-focused primarily on the value and calculating every decision, Lilian is a perfect example that you can play the game as a hobby and just enjoy the ride. And we love to see it!
There are a fair few UKPL and 888poker LIVE events still remaining for the year, so who knows, maybe we’ll get to see Welch pick up another title. Poker heaters are a thing, and there is no age limit as to when you may stumble upon one.
