GGPoker’s flagship freezeout tournament, GGMasters, has posted back-to-back overlays for the first time in nearly a year, with the last two editions both falling short of their $1 million guarantee.

The latest edition, held on June 22, attracted 6,488 entries at a $150 buy-in, producing $895,344 toward its advertised $1 million guarantee. GGPoker covered the remaining $104,656, making it the largest overlay recorded by a regular GGMasters edition since the tournament adopted a $1 million guarantee last year.

A week earlier, the tournament also fell short, drawing 6,703 entries and leaving the operator to make up a $74,986 difference.

Two consecutive overlays naturally stand out for a tournament that has become one of online poker’s biggest weekly fixtures. But viewed over a longer period, they represent an exception rather than the rule.

GGMasters has been running with a $1 million guarantee since March 2025, when GGPoker doubled the tournament’s previous $500,000 prize pool. The tournament has effectively become online poker’s weekly million-dollar flagship, filling a space once dominated by PokerStars’ Sunday Million.

The jump was ambitious. At a $150 buy-in, the tournament needs 7,247 entries every week simply to meet its guarantee.

There were early growing pains. Although the first two million-dollar editions comfortably surpassed 8,000 entries, participation soon dipped below the required level, resulting in several overlays during the tournament’s first few months.

Those struggles didn’t last long. After four consecutive overlays in June 2025, GGMasters settled into a remarkably consistent rhythm. Week after week, attendance comfortably cleared the break-even mark, usually finishing somewhere between 7,500 and 8,000 entries.

That streak lasted almost an entire year before finally ending this month.

The Numbers Still Favor GGMasters

The recent overlays become even more interesting when viewed alongside the tournament’s overall record. Since the guarantee increased to $1 million, GGMasters has completed 65 regular weekly editions.

Across those tournaments, players have generated 496,020 entries, averaging 7,631 per week—almost 400 entries above what the tournament needs to avoid an overlay. Only 11 of those 65 editions have failed to reach the guarantee.

Together, those overlays total roughly $614,000, averaging around $56,000 each. Considering the tournament has distributed nearly $70 million in prize money during that span, the recent misses barely dent its long-term performance.

The figures also illustrate how close GGMasters usually runs to its target. A swing of only a few hundred entries is often enough to determine whether the tournament records an overlay or exceeds its guarantee.

Summer Traffic Begins to Ease

The timing of the recent overlays is unlikely to surprise regular poker players. Both came immediately after GGPoker wrapped up the GG World Festival, which awarded more than $350 million across thousands of tournaments over several weeks.

Major online series often leave operators with a quieter period as many players reduce their volume after an intense festival schedule. Summer has also traditionally been one of the slower seasons for online poker traffic.

There were already signs that attendance was easing before the overlays appeared. During the GG World Festival itself, GGMasters failed to attract more than 8,000 entries in any weekly edition, though it still managed to clear its guarantee each time.

Whether the last two Sundays prove to be nothing more than a seasonal slowdown or the beginning of a longer trend will become clearer over the coming weeks.

Still One of Online Poker’s Biggest Weeklies

Despite the recent shortfalls, GGMasters continues to occupy a unique place in the online poker schedule. Launched in 2020, it has kept its $150 buy-in and freezeout format throughout its six-year history while growing from a $250,000 guaranteed tournament into a weekly event offering $1 million.

Across more than 300 editions, GGMasters has attracted over 1.5 million entries and awarded more than $235 million in prize money.

The last two Sundays may have interrupted one of the tournament’s longest streaks without an overlay, but they do little to change its standing as one of the largest recurring tournaments in online poker. If anything, the coming weeks will show whether the recent dip was simply the result of the annual summer slowdown or something more lasting.

GGMasters will return this Sunday with another $1 million guarantee. Satellites are running around the clock.
