The Empire State could join the like of New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada in 2018 to legalize online poker.

Although it is an optimistic outlook to take, it might not be unrealistic.

A bill to legalize online poker in New York state has more than 40 co-sponsors within the New York Assembly with Assemblyman Gary Pretlow saying that there will be a significant push this year to bring the bill to life, however he is pushing to get 76 co sponsors to give the bill as much momentum as possible. If legalized online poker comes to pass New York will just one of a handful of states to offer legal online poker to its residents. With around 20 million residents in that state, the addition of New York give the US online poker market a significant uptick.

Pennsylvania is likely to pip New York to the post at offering legalize online gaming opportunities to its residents as law has already passed, with the state already accepting applications for land-based casinos and online poker operators. Pennsylvania has a population of around 12million residents. It is worth noting that if both New York and Pennsylvania legally come online in 2018 the combined population would be bigger than what we see now in New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada combined—New York and Pennsylvania would have a combined population of around 32 million people whereas New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada have just a mere 13 million combined.

Hopefully if New York comes online this year, we will also see them join the trio-state shared liquidity player pool that currently includes, New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada. If they did it would create a huge amount of liquidity to the market. May 2018 marked the advent of this trio-state player pool. Regulators in New Jersey agreed to join the shared liquidity pool established by Nevada and Delaware back in 2014 and put into action in 2015, with everything falling into place in May 2018.

Although the road is still long in New York for a bill to pass, lawmakers are hoping that a federal sports betting ban that is being revisited in June 2018 will help create enough interest around the topic of iGaming to help push the online poker law forward.
