PokerStars Mystery Cash ChallengeThe PokerStars Mystery Cash Challenge was a poker cash game show that combined high-stakes Hold’em with mystery prizes, unusual challenges, and a bomb pot at the end of every episode.

PokerStars produced two seasons of the show. Season 1 debuted in 2023 with a lineup featuring Alexandra Botez, Maria Ho, Parker “Tonkaaaa” Talbot, Sam Grafton, Griffin Benger, and Fabiano Kovalski. A second season followed in 2024 with another six-player lineup and several additions to the format.

The basic concept remained the same: Every episode consisted of just ten hands. Players spent the first nine hands trying to qualify for a final bomb pot, with the winner receiving mystery prizes and challenges that could affect the next episode.

No third season has been announced, but both seasons remain available to watch online.

Mystery Cash Challenge Rules

Mystery Cash Challenge used a format unlike a conventional televised poker cash game.

Six players competed at €25/€50 stakes, with the game played pot limit before the flop and no limit after the flop.

Each episode consisted of exactly ten hands.

The first nine hands formed the qualification stage. A player had to win at least one of those pots to qualify for the tenth and final hand.

Winning a qualifying hand earned the player a token.

The player who won the most pots during the first nine hands received the button for the final hand. If there was a tie, the player who had won a pot most recently received the button.

The Mystery Cash Challenge Bomb Pot

The tenth hand was the centerpiece of every episode.

Every player who had earned a token posted €100 before receiving cards. The flop was then dealt immediately, creating a bomb pot.

Players who failed to win one of the first nine hands did not participate.

After the flop, the hand proceeded as normal until a winner was determined.

The bomb-pot winner then received the opportunity to open mystery envelopes containing prizes and challenges.

Those challenges helped connect one episode to the next because their effects could change the rules for a player during the following round.

Mystery Cash Challenge Prizes

Mystery Cash Challenge borrowed the mystery-prize concept familiar from mystery bounties, but PokerStars added another layer to the format.

The winner of the final bomb pot selected two envelopes.

One contained a prize, while the other contained a challenge or special power that could affect the next episode.

Prizes during the series included:

  • Cash
  • PokerStars tournament tickets
  • €5,300 EPT Main Event tickets
  • PokerStars Gold Passes
  • Other novelty prizes

The challenge envelopes were where the format became particularly unusual.

Challenges seen across the show included:

  • Forcing another player to remain silent
  • Allowing a player to change one of their hole cards
  • Giving a player only five seconds to act
  • Preventing a player from checking
  • Forcing a selected player to limp when action had not been raised
  • Giving a player control over cards appearing on the board

Some challenges were mostly designed to create entertaining table situations, while others could have a significant effect on strategy.

A player forced to act within five seconds, for example, had much less time to work through a difficult river decision. Being able to replace a hole card could provide a much more direct advantage.

The result was a cash game in which the rules could change from one episode to the next.

Mystery Cash Challenge Season 1

PokerStars launched Mystery Cash Challenge in September 2023.

The first season featured:

  • Alexandra Botez
  • Maria Ho
  • Parker “Tonkaaaa” Talbot
  • Sam Grafton
  • Griffin Benger
  • Fabiano Kovalski

James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton provided commentary.

Each player began with a €10,000 cash-game stack and played €25/€50 Hold’em using the pot-limit preflop/no-limit postflop structure.

Season 1 quickly became associated with Alexandra Botez, who dominated much of the early action despite being better known as a chess player and content creator than as a professional poker player.

Botez won the bomb pot in the opening episode and collected a €500 mystery prize. Her challenge allowed her to force one opponent to remain silent during the next round, and she selected Parker Talbot.

She followed that by winning another bomb pot and pulling a €5,300 EPT Main Event ticket.

Botez continued accumulating chips and prizes as the season progressed, although Maria Ho eventually ended her streak of bomb-pot victories.

The original season established the elements that would return for Season 2: short ten-hand episodes, qualification tokens, the final bomb pot, mystery prizes, and challenges that altered subsequent play.

Mystery Cash Challenge Season 2

PokerStars brought Mystery Cash Challenge back for a second season in 2024.

The basic structure remained intact, with six players competing over six episodes at €25/€50 stakes.

Season 2 featured:

  • Parker “Tonkaaaa” Talbot
  • Lex Veldhuis
  • Barny Boatman
  • Alexander “Wolfgang Poker” Seibt
  • Benjamin “Spraggy” Spragg
  • Olga Iermolcheva

Talbot was the only player to return from the original lineup.

James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton again handled commentary.

The second season also introduced an additional strategic element: the Steal Card.

The Steal Card

The Steal Card was introduced for Season 2.

It initially went to the player who showed down the strongest winning hand.

If another player subsequently won a showdown with a stronger hand ranking, the Steal Card moved to that player.

For example, a player could initially earn it by winning with one pair. If another player later won a showdown with two pair or better, that player took possession of the card.

The player holding the Steal Card could remove one qualification token from another player before the final bomb pot.

That created another strategic wrinkle because a player with only one token could lose it and be eliminated from the final hand.

Parker “Tonkaaaa” Talbot

Parker Talbot returned after appearing in the first season.

The PokerStars player and streamer had finished Season 1 without claiming one of the mystery prizes, but his second appearance produced a dramatically different result.

Talbot ultimately became the biggest winner of Season 2.

Lex Veldhuis

Longtime PokerStars ambassador and streamer Lex Veldhuis joined the Season 2 table.

Although best known for tournament poker and streaming, Veldhuis brought extensive live and online poker experience to the cash-game format.

Barny Boatman

Barny Boatman brought decades of live poker experience to the lineup.

A member of the Hendon Mob and a familiar face from televised poker during the original poker boom, Boatman provided a contrast to some of the lineup’s younger streaming and social-media personalities.

Alexander “Wolfgang Poker” Seibt

Alexander Seibt, better known as Wolfgang Poker, represented the newer generation of poker content creators.

His short-form poker videos had built an enormous social-media audience before his Mystery Cash Challenge appearance.

Benjamin “Spraggy” Spragg

PokerStars streamer Benjamin “Spraggy” Spragg was another familiar face in the Season 2 lineup.

Spraggy brought his usual combination of poker experience and table humor to the six-player game.

Olga Iermolcheva

Ukrainian poker player Olga Iermolcheva completed the Season 2 lineup.

She had already reached a wider poker audience through her appearance on GGPoker’s Game of Gold before joining Mystery Cash Challenge.
