The PokerStars NJ app officially launched in March 2016. After a short soft-launch period, the site started accepting players from the Garden State without restrictions, offering them a chance to compete in online poker cash games and tournaments.

In January 2023, PokerStars NJ combined its player pool with that of PokerStars MI, significantly boosting its traffic and further solidifying its place as the top pick for anyone looking to play online poker for real money in New Jersey.

New Jersey has regulated online poker for nearly two decades. Since then, more operators have set up shop in NJ than in any other US state, so PokerStars has some serious competition. With so many options, it can be hard to choose, but you can rest assured that, with any site on the PokerStars US Network, you’re getting one of the safest, most trustworthy, and most fun places to play in the country.

The poker site is fully licensed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE), ensuring that it is a 100% legal, safe, and secure place to gamble. It has a physical presence in the state thanks to its partnership with Atlantic City-based Resorts Casino.

What is PokerStars NJ?

PokerStars NJ is one of several online poker sites licensed in the state of New Jersey. This means that the site operates in line with state laws and regulations and provides a safe and completely legal online platform featuring real-money poker games for everyone physically present within New Jersey borders and meeting other legal requirements.

PokerStars has built a stellar reputation worldwide on its tournaments, which include some of the biggest you’ll find anywhere. The operator’s flagship tournament series include the NJ Championship of Online Poker (NJCOOP), the NJ Spring Championship of Online Poker (NJSCOOP), Sunday Majors, and Spin & Go’s.

In addition to New Jersey, the operator also runs PokerStars PA in Pennsylvania and PokerStars MI in Michigan. As of Jan 1, 2023, PokerStars NJ shares player pools with PokerStars MI. Now would be a great time to set up an account and take advantage of the largest US online poker network in terms of player traffic.

PokerStars NJ Welcome Bonuses

Welcome Bonuses
4.5
Generous!

Like its competitors in the state, PokerStars New Jersey offers a solid welcome bonus package for all new players. There are two distinct offers, but players can only take advantage of one of them.

We have broken down both of these welcome bonuses in detail, so you can see what they offer and which one might be a better fit for your particular situation with regard to your bankroll, playing habits, and aspirations.

Get $150 in Poker & Casino Bonus Play

The operator has decided to make its welcome offer uniform across the PokerStars US sites once again. This means that players in New Jersey can now also claim $150 worth of Bonus Play after playing just one cash game hand.

To qualify for the offer, players need to manually opt-in for it from the Challenges window and meet the requirement (i.e. play a hand at real money cash tables) within the first five days since registering.

The bonus goodies are awarded as follows:

  1. Day 0: 2x$5 Spin & Go ticket & 50x$1 Spin & Go tickets
  2. Day 1: 50 bonus spins for casino slots
  3. Day 2: 2x$5 & 1x$10 Spin & Go tickets
  4. Day 3: $10 casino bonus
  5. Day 4: 2x$10 tickets
  6. Day 5: $30 casino bonus

As is usually the case with PokerStars tickets from promotions, any winnings players get from target tournaments are theirs to keep without any restrictions or wagering requirements. Winnings from the casino portion of the bonus are still subject to wagering requirements.

100% up to $600 Match Bonus

The second welcome offer by PokerStars New Jersey is more in line with what players are used to. It is a simple and straightforward match bonus, boosting your first deposit in full up to $600.

For this bonus, the minimum deposit is $10, and you will need to use the code STARS600 to trigger the offer.

When your deposit goes through, the site will issue the bonus amount, but this money is not available for play immediately. Instead, you will need to release it in increments. Every time you earn 140 Redemption Points, $10 of the bonus will be released into your real money account with no further restrictions.

Redemption Points are earned at the rate of 5 points for every $1 paid in rake or tournament fees, which means that the welcome bonus provides you with an effective rakeback of 35% while active.

You have 120 days to clear the bonus. Any funds not released after that period expires will be removed from the bonus balance, but you will keep all the cash released up to that point.

Getting involved in these freerolls is a great way for players to earn additional bonuses and special rewards.

PokerStars NJ Stars Rewards Program

Rewards
3.0
good for casual

Stars Rewards is a personalized rewards system for the players that the site uses across its network. It is an interesting concept that provides value for poker, casino, and sportsbook players alike, but it is not as appealing to those interested exclusively in poker.

The rewards you get are based on how much and how high you play. The system is fairly straightforward, but there are some random elements to it, as you can never be certain what to expect. If you are new to PokerStars NJ, this is how it works in a nutshell:

  • You can keep track of your rewards progress through the My Stars section of PokerStars NJ.
  • To progress, you need to collect reward points, which you do by playing real money poker, betting on sports, or wagering in the casino.
  • To unlock the next reward, you need to fill the Progress Bar.
  • You will unlock the next Chest once the Progress Bar is full.
  • Inside the Chest, you will find Bonus Play money, tournament tickets, and StarsCoin, which can be used at the Rewards Store.

Rewards Points

The key to moving your Progress Bar forward is collecting Rewards Points. You will receive these points for different activities, but the main source of Rewards Points will be your play at one of PokerStar’s products.

As some general guidelines, this is what you can expect:

  • Online Poker: receive 100 Rewards Points for every $1 you pay in cash game rake or tournament fees
  • Stars Casino: Different games contribute at a different rate towards Rewards Points. You should check the PokerStars NJ site for the exact information.
  • Sports Betting: You will receive 1.7 points for every $1 wagered on a single bet and 4.7 points for every $1 staked on multiple wagers.

PokerStars Chests Explained

Chests make up a very important part of the rewards system at PokerStars. As mentioned, these chests contain different rewards, and you can never know for sure what is inside until you open them. However, based on the color of the Chest, there are certain guaranteed values that you can count with.

_*PokerStars Chests Expected Values*?

  1. Blue Chest: rewards ranging from $0.36 – $6
  2. Bronze Chest: rewards ranging from $0.72 – $12
  3. Silver Chest: rewards ranging from $1.80 – $30
  4. Gold Chest: rewards ranging from $6 – $100
  5. Diamond Chest: rewards ranging from $15 – $250
  6. Black Chest: rewards ranging from $42 – $700

If you would rather collect more Chests and open them all at once, you can also do that. Just keep in mind that unopened Chests will expire after three months.

PokerStars NJ Tournaments

tournaments
4.75
world leader

On the global level, there is no other poker site out there that can parry PokerStars when it comes to Multi Table Tournaments (MTTs). Huge events attracting thousands of players and offering massive prize pools are greatly responsible for the success the room enjoys today.

PokerStars New Jersey has continued down the same path, creating a very solid schedule of daily and weekly tournaments across the board. From micro-stakes to high-roller events, there is something for everyone. This offering has only improved with the operator joining forces with its sister site in Michigan, creating a much larger player pool and creating opportunities for bigger guarantees across the board.

In addition to featuring Texas Hold’em events, PokerStars NJ also hosts tournaments in variants such as:

  • Omaha
  • Seven Card Stud
  • Razz
  • Five Card Draw

MTTs

The daily MTT schedule is very rich, with certain event categories enjoying great popularity with the players. These are:

  • The Daily Bigs (featuring buy-ins from $5 to $30)
  • The Hot Turbos (turbo MTTs with buy-ins from $5 to $50)
  • KO Fever — daily Progressive Knockout tournaments
  • Change-Up — four daily tournaments featuring a different game format each

As always, there are also several weekly tournaments worth playing, the most prominent ones taking place on Sundays, i.e. Sunday Warm-Up, Sunday Special, Sunday Storm, and Sunday High Roller.

PokerStars NJ has really done a lot for the online tournament scene by introducing special series such as the New Jersey Championship of Online Poker (NJCOOP) and NJSCOOP.

PokerStars NJ 'COOPs

PokerStars is best known for its major tournaments, and the ones under the COOP heading take the cake. There are two of these taking place in New Jersey every year:

  • NJ Championship of Online Poker (NJCOOP) – usually taking place in September
  • NJ Spring Championship of Online Poker (NJSCOOP) – taking place in the first half of the year, between March and May

In 2023, PokerStars combined its player pools from Michigan and New Jersey, bringing them all under one roof. This allowed for their 'COOP events to become even bigger and better, but since these series now combine players from two states, they have been renamed to contain the 'US’ prefix instead of specific state prefixes.

While there are only two states participating in USCOOP tournaments for the time being, the number will likely grow in the future, with PokerStars PA probably joining the fold in the near future, followed by new states where the operator decides to launch.

In general, 'COOP events attract a lot of attention, featuring big prize pools across dozens of tournaments, and offering players a chance to compete not just in No-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha events, but also tournaments featuring less popular variants, like 7 Card Stud, Badugi, 2-7 Triple Draw, and more.

Sit & Go

PokerStars NJ offers a decent selection of sit & go tournaments across various stake levels. You will find Hold’em and Omaha games in both turbo and regular time formats.

The traffic in these is not the greatest, so if you want to play SNGs, you will probably have to be patient and wait for a bit for the games to fill up, especially as you move up the stakes.

Spin & Go’s

Spin & Go tournaments became very popular shortly after PokerStars released them. This exciting format gives players a chance to get lucky and play for a prize worth up to 1000 times their buy-in against just two other players.

Players in New Jersey have access to Spin & Go’s as well. There are five distinct levels: $1, $2, $5, $10, and $25.

These are winner-take-all tournaments when there are smaller multipliers at stake. However, if you get seated into one of the top three tiers (80x, 100x, or 1000x), you will be guaranteed to cash in, as the second and third-place finishers get to split 8% to 10% of the prize pool.

PokerStars NJ Spin & Go buy-ins & prizes

Buy-In Min Prize Jackpot
$1 $2 $2000
$5 $10 $10,000
$10 $20 $20,000
$25 $50 $50,000

Cash Games

cash games
4.5
biggest selection

PokerStars NJ offers a wide array of cash game options across all different stakes. Tables start as low as $0.01/$0.02 and go up to $25/$50, so there is plenty of choice for everyone. The range of poker variations is better than at any other poker site available in the state:

  • No-Limit Hold’em
  • Pot-Limit Omaha
  • Fixed-Limit Omaha
  • No-Limit Omaha
  • 7 Card Stud
  • Razz
  • Five Card Draw

As you would expect, the action is best at NLHE and PLO tables. You will have no problems finding games running up to NL500 around the clock. Beyond these stakes, there is not as much action, although things tend to pick up at weekends.

PokerStars NJ Safety & Fairness

As a licensed operator in the state of New Jersey, PokerStars NJ takes the security and fairness of its games very seriously. The platform is regulated by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and must follow strict rules and regulations designed to protect players.

PokerStars NJ uses advanced technology, including an independently-tested random number generator, to ensure that every hand dealt on the platform is completely random and fair. The operator has no ability to manipulate the results of games, and players can trust that the games are not rigged.

The PokerStars software uses a random number generator that has been independently verified to produce a shuffle that is completely random and unbiased. The methods used guarantee the complete randomization of cards and complete unpredictability of future cards.

The random number generator employed by PokerStars is highly advanced and based on quantum theory. It utilizes a process involving a single photon being directed at a semi-transparent mirror. The angle at which the photon is reflected or whether it passes through the mirror is completely random and cannot be accurately predicted, replicated, or influenced.

This random number generator has been thoroughly tested and certified by Gaming Labs International (GLI) to meet the standards for highly-regulated jurisdictions.

In addition to ensuring the fairness of its games, PokerStars NJ also takes steps to protect players’ funds and personal information. The platform uses advanced encryption protocols to secure all communication between players and servers, making it impossible for this information to be intercepted or misused.

PokerStars NJ also uses geolocation technology to ensure that all players are physically located within the state of New Jersey. Players must follow these requirements, and any attempt to play from outside the state could result in account closure and potential legal issues.

PokerStars NJ Tournament History

To get a better idea of how PokerStars has performed in New Jersey, we are bringing you a historical overview of some of the most important events and series the operator had hosted.

NJSCOOP 2022 in March

The popular Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) came back across the PokerStars US sites, running from March 25 to April 11. So, the NJSCOOP 2022 takes place somewhat earlier this year.

January 2022 Winter Series

Looking to start 2022 in a strong fashion, PokerStars NJ hosted a tournament series in January, aptly named Winter Series. By the time it was all said and done, NJ players took home over $640,000 in prizes spread across 40 events.

The $300 Main Event attracted 426 entry, resulting in a $119,000 prize pool. This was enough to break the guarantee mark of $100K. The tournament winner banked just shy of $25,000.

25 Days of Tournaments in December

PokerStars NJ pulled out all the stops during December, giving tournament players a lot to look forward to with their 25 Days of Tournaments promotion.

During the promo, which ran December 6 – December 30, nightly $10 and $50 tournaments featured random Chest drops, containing MTT and Spin & Go tickets.

October 2021 New Jersey Classic

PokerStars launched another edition of the popular New Jersey Classic for Garden State players. The event, which featured a guarantee of $100,000, attracted a total of 350 entries.

When it was all said and done, 48 players ended in the money, while the winner, a player going under the alias 'kyleorto86’ banked $18,460 for their efforts.

NJSCOOP 2021 Numbers

The 2021 edition of NJSCOOP was a big success for PokerStars. The series featured 163 tournaments, attracting a total of 26,000 entries and generating a prize pool of almost $1.4 million.

The Main Event was the pinnacle of the series, resulting in a prize pool of $109,400. The eventual winner walked away with a more than respectable prize of $18,183.

NJ Summer Stacks Series 2021

The Summer Stacks Series was launched in June 2021 across all three PokerStars US sites. Featuring buy-ins from $5 to $100, the Series was focused primarily on recreational players.

PokerStars NJ did not have as rich of a schedule as the other two sites, but players still had an opportunity to get involved in 100 distinct tournaments spread across 17 days. The overall guarantee for the Summer Stacks Series NJ was $528,000.

The operator struggled to meet the guarantees across the board, and even the $50,000 guaranteed Main Event fell just short, with 539 total entries.

NJCOOP 2021

NJCOOP 2021 took place September 10 – 27, featuring a massive guarantee of $1,000,000 across 60 events. This included the $100K guaranteed Main Event on September 26 and featured a buy-in of $300.

Over the period of 18 years, the series awarded $1.1 million in prizes, breaking the overall guarantee by over $100,000. The total number of entries over all the tournaments was 10,600. Although 2021 NJCOOP exceeded its guaranteed prize pool, there were several overlay events.

If fact, the Main Event was in this group. In the end, the tournament attracted 334 entries, so it fell just short of making its $100K guarantee. The eventual 2021 NJCOOP winner banked $18,600.
