PokerStars had a very good first year in the Keystone State, providing players with a variety of gaming options and generous promotions. Their first PACOOP (Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker) featured a prize pool of $1.25 million and more than 50 individual events.

In November of 2020, the operator also hosted the Anniversary Series to celebrate the success in the PA market, offering $1,000,000 in prizes spread across 35 tournaments.

Borgata Poker PA

Borgata Poker PA LogoThe third fully licensed and regulated option for PA players to go live was Borgata Poker PA. The site is hosted on the BetMGM Poker US Network, powered by partypoker, just like BetMGM itself, so these two operators share their player pools in the state.

Borgata Poker PA offers an identical welcome bonus — (100% up to $1000 & $75 in MTT tickets) and the same software platform, so if choosing between the two, it is mostly down to personal preferences.

The room represents a good choice for tournament and cash game players alike. If MTTs are your cup of tea, the weekly schedule offers a fair number of events across all stakes. The operator also features regular series with solid guarantees and frequent overlays, adding a lot of value to the mix.

The cash game action is quite decent at Borgata Poker PA as well. While the highest stakes games may not run regularly, you will find plenty of active tables at low and mid-stakes, running around the clock.

Borgata Poker PA features following games and variations:

  • Multi-table tournaments (MTT)
  • Sit & Goes
  • No Limit Hold’em cash games

WSOP PA LogoWSOP PA was the latest operator to join the market in July of 2021. The company has had serious plans for Pennsylvania. for a while but was waiting for the right moment to go live.

WSOP used this opportunity to introduce its new Poker 8 software to the US market. With this, Pennsylvania became the first state to have access to the new platform and, in 2022, WSOP MI launched with the new Poker 8 software as well. WSOP’s online poker rooms in New Jersey and Nevada still use the old software and it is not clear when the operator plans to make the switch.

One thing that really makes the WSOP PA stand out from the rest is its ability to set up online events awarding real-life WSOP bracelets. It gives it a significant advantage over other rooms operating in the state and helps attract players in great numbers.

WSOP PA welcomes players with a generous bonus and provides a variety of ongoing promotions for its existing customers. You will have access to frequent reload bonuses and other valuable promotions to keep your bankroll healthy even during the stretches of bad luck.

WSOP PA spreads the following game types and variations:

  • No Limit Hold’em
  • PLO
  • MTTs
  • BLAST (jackpot sit and goes)

Other Poker Sites Going Live in PA

With WSOP entering Pennsylvania in July of 2021, the only major player in the US market still remaining is partypoker. However, since Borgata and BetMGM Poker, both of which operate on the BetMGM US Network, are already live, it is not certain if there is too much interest to launch the third brand.

Beyond these major industry stakeholders in the US, there is also GGPoker. One of the leaders in the international online poker markets seems to have its eyes set on Pennsylvania. Its software has already been approved by the PGCB, but the company still has some length to go as they would first need to find a land-based partner in the state.

The launch of GGPoker PA would be of great significance in the grand scheme of things, but it is still unclear if the operator plans to launch under its own brand or if it will do it through a partnership with another brand, creating a new, US-specific poker site.

PA Online Poker Tournament Series

With PokerStars being the only active operator in Pennsylvania until May of 2021, tournament players were limited to what this particular operator had to offer in terms of series and competitions.

So far, the room has organized the Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker (PACOOP), with more than 50 events and a guaranteed prize pool across all tournaments well exceeding $1,000,000. The 2020 PACOOP Main Event featured a $200,000 guarantee.

in September of 2021, PokerStars was back with PACOOP, and this time around the series featured 69 events and $2,000,000 in guarantees. With over 25,500 entries across all tournaments and the Main Event exceeding the guarantee of almost $40,000, the 2021 PACOOP was another big success for the operator.

It is fair to say that PSPA has set the bar pretty high, so newcomers to the market, BetMGM PA and Borgata Poker PA have their work cut out for them. If they want to attract players their way, they will need to offer series that feature similar numbers.

While PokerStars definitely has the experience on its side when it comes to organizing large online events, aspiring operators have one thing working for them, and that’s the size of the market. Pennsylvania has a massive potential pool of players, so hosting extensive MTT series with big guarantees should not be a huge risk and it would be a major marketing move to get their foot in the door early on.

The arrival of WSOP PA has definitely shaken things up in the state. The room went all out, announcing the first-ever WSOP Online Series for Pennsylvania players. The inaugural series featured eight bracelet-awarding events and it turned out a big success for the operator.

WSOP did not stop here, either. Shortly after, they launched the PA Online Circuit, featuring a dozen tournaments with solid guarantees and prestigious WSOPC rings for the winners.

In October 2021, WSOP PA was back at it with its Fall Online Championship. This time around, things did not quite turn out as planned for the operator, as the series ended up featuring almost $250,000 in overlays. Of course, this presented a great value for those players who participated, as only 14 events out of 66 managed to break the guarantee.

WSOP PA started 2022 with a bang as well, launching the $500,000 Online Circuit series, featuring big guarantees and Circuit rings up for grabs across 12 events in January. This clearly shows the operator has very serious intentions in the Keystone State, and players can only look forward to bigger and better things in the future.

This kind of variety and competition is only a good thing for the players. With operators fighting for a position in the market, there will be bigger guarantees and more value across the board.

Best Pennsylvania Online Poker Bonuses

Depending on what you are looking for exactly, PA poker sites offer some interesting bonus options for new players.

Signing up for PokerStars PA gives you two options. You can either go for the standard welcome bonus of 100% deposit match up to $600 or get $100 worth of free funds to use (a mix of Spin & Go tickets, casino funds, and free spins) after playing a single cash hand. So, newcomers to online poker have a nice option to get them started and provide them with some extra funds to use as they figure things out.

Registering at BetMGM Poker and Borgata Poker gets you a straight-up first deposit bonus of up to $1000, so their offers have a higher maximum than what is offered by PokerStars. Players can also get up to $75 worth of free tournament tickets, depending on the size of their first deposit.

New players at WSOP PA get a very attractive welcome package as well. All new players can claim $50 in free funds after making the minimum deposit of $10. There is also a very generous 100% deposit match up to $1000, which means those with bigger bankrolls can actually get the best value for their money here. The only downside of WSOP Pennsylvania is that it does not offer any completely free funds in the form of a no deposit bonus.

Pennsylvania Online Poker: Overview

Online gambling in Pennsylvania was first legalized in December of 2017 with the passage of the gambling expansion act (officially, H 271). Like with other regulated states, it took some time before online gambling and poker operators actually opened their doors and started accepting players.

Online poker officially went live in the Keystone State in November of 2019with the launch of PokerStars PA}. This was the first regulated poker site in the state and poker-playing Pennsylvanians were finally given a legal and regulated site to play on.

Of all the US states that currently have legal online poker (Nevada, Delaware, Michigan, and New Jersey), Pennsylvania is the one with the largest number of residents — nearly 13 million! As such, it represents a very interesting potential market for operators and has the potential for some interesting developments in the future, especially now that the DOJ decided not to appeal the First Circuit Court decision, which reverts the Wire Act interpretation to its previous state, meaning it applies only to sports betting.

Added Value: Best Bonuses & Promotions at PA Online Poker Sites

On top of great action at the tables, PA poker players get to enjoy a variety of bonuses and promotions to help them keep their bankrolls healthy. All licensed operators offer regular and occasional promotions, and these are the most common types you will come across.

Welcome Bonuses

Welcome bonuses are arguably the most valuable promotion type that poker players in Pennsylvania get to enjoy. They are extended to new players upon signing up with an operator and usually offer a deposit match. For example, if you deposit $200, the room will give you another $200 in bonus funds.

These bonuses are generally released gradually. As you play and generate rake, smaller chunks of the bonus will be transferred to your real money account, effectively increasing your win rate while the bonus is active.

No Deposit Bonuses

Some PA poker sites provide no deposit bonuses as a part of their welcome offer. With these, players only need to sign up for an account and verify their details. After that, they receive a small amount in free funds or tournament tickets, which they can use to play in real money games and win real money prizes.

No deposit bonuses represent a great way to get familiar with a new room, see what the action is like, and even kick-start your poker bankroll without risking your own money. While they are mostly reserved for new players, existing customers are treated to these types of offers every now and again as well.

Freeroll Tickets

Poker rooms love treating their players to freeroll entries and these come in all shapes and sizes. From freeroll tournaments reserved for new players over the ones organized for special occasions to events accompanying major series, PA poker players will find a lot of freeroll action across regulated sites.

These tickets provide a great way to play some poker for free and potentially win real cash or entries into tournaments with real money buy-ins. They usually have an expiry date, though, so whenever you get one of these, make sure to use it within the allotted time.

Online Poker in PA: Laws and Regulation

Laws and regulations pertaining to online poker in Pennsylvania are not that much different from those pertaining to live games.

  • Players have to be at least 21 of age to register and play for real money.
  • You are only allowed to have one account with any individual operator.
  • Players are liable for state and federal taxes.

As for the operators, they have to adhere to a strict set of rules at all times. First of all, all sites wanting to offer real money games in PA must be approved and licensed by the PGCB.

Secondly, player funds must always be stored separately and kept away from operating accounts. This is an insurance policy of sorts, guaranteeing that players will not be out of their money if the company experiences financial difficulties.

All licensed gambling operators (casinos, betting sites, and poker rooms) must also act responsibly and make sure players have access to various responsible gambling tools and resources. Things such as deposit and loss limits are mandatory, and they must also provide links to professional help for all players who might need such assistance.

Geolocation Rules

The situation with geolocation is pretty much uniform across all regulated US states. Players must be physically present within the borders of the state to legally play with any operator licensed by that particular state.

Pennsylvania is no exception to this rule. While players do not have to be residents of the state to be able to play, they do have to be inside the state to both open an account and play for real money.

This is one of the most important rules there are and trying to get around this restriction is not just breaking the site rules but also constitutes the breaking of federal laws. Therefore, you should never try to get around the site’s security protocols and play from a different state.

You will not be able to do this by accident. Online poker sites in PA employ different geolocation software solutions to verify the player’s location information. You will also need to allow location tracking on your device.

Online Poker Apps in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania residents wanting to download and install poker software and mobile apps on their devices will experience no special difficulties. The process itself is identical to that of downloading any other software, gambling or otherwise.

Of course, it is important to be in the state when attempting to do this. Even if you were able to gain access to the site and download the software, you will not be able to register for an account unless you are in PA.

Other than this, you should have no problems with this particular aspect.

Simply visit the site you want to play on and find the download link. If you are playing from your computer, you will download the installation file and then run it locally. Once installed, you can use the software to open an account if you do not have one already.

Mobile users will need to download the appropriate app. If the site offers both Android and iOS apps, you need to select the one that fits your device.

Players using iPhones will have no problems as poker apps can be downloaded straight from the App Store. Android users will probably need to download the app from an “unofficial” location (i.e. not Google Play), so you will have to allow the installation manually.

Either way, downloading and installing online poker apps in PA is not a big challenge as long as you are located within the state lines.

How to Sign Up With PA Online Poker Sites

Licensed poker sites in Pennsylvania make it very easy for new players to sign up and join the action. You will need to follow a few simple steps to create your account, get some funds online, and get started:

  • Pick the PA poker room you like
  • Visit the site and make sure they are licensed by the PGCB
  • Locate the signup link or button & click on it
  • Fill in the required account and personal details
  • Verify your email address via the link sent to you
  • Log in with your newly created account to make a deposit and claim your welcome bonus

Safety and Fairness at PA Online Poker Sites

Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board PGCB LogoRegulated online poker sites in Pennsylvania offer everything that unregulated, offshore rooms do not. Every operator is licensed by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) and if they happen to break any regulator rules, they can suffer consequences.

It is also very important to note that these sites are owned and operated by well-known, established, and reputable companies. All licensed sites must have a base of operations in the state as well, which makes it much easier to resolve any issues that may come up.

You can also rest assured that your sensitive personal information will be kept safe and all real money transactions are handled with the utmost care. Regulated PA poker sites have to adhere to very strict rules set forth by the regulator and breaking any of these rules could cost them heavy fines or even their license. With a lot on the line, these operators do things by the book, which cannot be said for any of the offshore sites accepting US players.

It is also worth noting that all sites operating in Pennsylvania are owned by large and well-known companies that care about their reputation and have long-term strategies in place, which is usually a positive for the players.

PokerStars, for example, is easily the best-known online poker brand in the world. This means they have much more on the line than smaller, unknown rooms no one has even heard of. In the event of problems or disputes, they will respect the decision of the regulator and will not go out of their way to try and trick the players.

The same goes for the sites hosted on the BetMGM Poker US Network (partypoker, Borgata, and BetMGM). Operated by a large corporation, these are very safe and solvent sites that should never have problems meeting their obligations towards players.

Of course, WSOP US is one of the strongest brands in poker in general, so players can count on the fact the operator will do things by the book and do everything to uphold their reputation.

You can always find the site’s licensing information somewhere in the footer area of the home page. If you have any reason to believe that the licensing information is incorrect or fabricated, you can cross-reference it with the information on the PGCB site, where you can find the full list of operators licensed by the state regulatory authority.

Banking Options

Players in Pennsylvania have access to a solid range of banking options to fund their online poker efforts and withdraw their winnings. Regardless of what option you go for, you can rest assured all transactions are 100% safe and secure, as the operators employ the best and latest security standards when it comes to processing payments.

Sharing your financial details with an online poker site will not put you in any danger. As per the regulator’s rules, the financial information is handled carefully and it is only disclosed to the parties that absolutely need access to it to process your payment requests.

The most common options you will find offered by the PA sites include:

  • MasterCard
  • Visa
  • Skrill
  • PayPal
  • Certain prepaid cards
  • In-person deposits and brick-and-mortar partner venues

Withdrawals are subject to security checks, which usually take a few hours, but in some cases can take up to 72 hours. Of course, all players need to go through identity verification prior to their very first withdrawal. The process entails sending a scan or a photo of your government-issued ID to ensure your funds are going to the right person.

The security team of the operator checks the ID and compares the information on it with the information provided during the registration to make sure all details match.

Expectations for Shared Liquidity and Interstate Poker in Pennsylvania

If Pennsylvania were to join the other regulated states of MSIGA to share online poker liquidity across state lines, it would be a major step forward for regulated online poker in the States. With a population of almost 13 million, the Keystone State would be a huge boost to any other player pool out there.

The state regulator is not against the idea and the PGCB has hinted at the possibility of creating interstate compacts several times already.

As for Pennsylvania, PokerStars is currently the most-established operator. in the state When the time comes, they will probably seek to merge player pools with the other two existing rooms, namely PokerStars NJ and PokerStars MI.

If PS was able to do this, the network created through the merger would be one of the largest ones on a global scale. Whether this kind of development is possible in 2021 is anybody’s guess at this point in time, though.

The same goes for WSOP, as the ability to combine the PA player pool with the ones in New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware, and Michigan would create a wealth of new opportunities. Of course, the operator has one big advantage over PokerStars, as it could provide PA players with opportunities to compete for coveted WSOP bracelets from the comforts of their homes.

Sites on the BetMGM US Network — BetMGM Poker PA and Borgata Poker PA — would definitely jump at the opportunity to join pools with other states where they have a presence — primarily Michigan and New Jersey.

As for the betting options, punters can bet on all popular sports like hockey, football, boxing, soccer, etc.

Mohegan Sun Pocono

Mohegan Sun Pocono offers a variety of options for Pennsylvania players, from slots and table games to in-person poker.

However, there is usually plenty of action to be had, and players also get a chance to take advantage of several promotions such as bad beat jackpots (cash games and tournaments) and royal flush jackpots for each of the four suits.

The casino offers almost 2000 slot and video poker machines as well as a rich table games area featuring Mississippi Stud, craps, roulette, Pai Gow, Three Card Poker, blackjack, etc.
