Shot clocks have been a hot topic in poker for some time now as organizers try to find the best way to reduce stalling while not pushing the limits so fart that players don’t have enough time to think.

Lappin brings an interesting article based on his recent experiences and asks some important questions. If rules are in place and players agree to and abide by them, is there really a need to push further and come up with on-the-spot decisions that override the said rules and basically punish players for doing what they were told was fine?

However, Polk goes on to say that maybe one reason participation is down at this year’s Main Event is due to the fact that online gambling is now available in many states. This means people don’t need to travel to play live poker—they can do so from the comfort of home.

Just to remind everyone, online poker is only legal in a handful of US states, notably (New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Michigan).

Anything else is grey-market at best, and I doubt it has any bearing on WSOP Main Event participation levels.

What would the 2006 WSOP Main Event look like in today’s money?

I shared this on X yesterday, and it’s a fun one to look back at.

The 2006 WSOP Main Event generated an $82.5 million prize pool. Adjusted for inflation, that would be worth roughly $130 million today, the equivalent of nearly 14,000 entries at the current $10,000 buy-in.

Ever wondered how much the WSOP makes from the Main Event?

The 9,208-player field generated an $85.63 million prize pool, but that’s not where the WSOP makes its money.

The tournament also brought in $6.45 million in entry fees. Of that, $1.93 million goes to dealers and tournament staff, while WSOP/NSUS keeps the remaining $4.51 million.

Last year, they collected $6.8 million in fees, of which a little over $2 million was paid to staff and dealers, and the remaining $4.7 million by WSOP officials.

The former champ becomes the bubble boy.

As luck would have it, Chris Moneymaker (alongside other two players) gets the dubious honor of bubbling the 2026 WSOP Main Event.

As the bubble of the biggest tournament in all of poker approaches, the excitement is palpable!

The Main Event bubble will burst early today.

There are only seven players remaining in the Main Event who’ll leave the tournament with nothing to show for it. Everyone else will get at least $15,000 for their efforts.

Surprise, surprise: the WSOP Main Event is becoming less American.

Remember when everyone expected the WSOP Main Event to become more American? The numbers continue to tell a different story.

The Main Event has actually gone from 66.7% American to 61.2% American in two years.

Players from outside the US accounted for 38.8% of the field this year, up slightly from 38.6% in 2025 and well above the 33.3% seen in 2024.

WSOP 2026 Main Event sees highest female participation ever.

431 women entered the 2026 WSOP Main Event, the highest in recent years and up from 369 in 2025.

Women’s representation also climbed from 3.79% to 4.68% of the field, another encouraging sign for the game’s biggest tournament.

Here are some interesting statistics as WSOP Main Event Day 4 gets underway.

Day 4 resumes in just a few minutes with 1,389 players still in the hunt. They’re just seven eliminations away from the money, with 1,382nd place guaranteed a minimum cash of $15,000.

Of the 1,389 remaining players, 786 are from the United States, representing about 57% of the field. The UK has 67 players remaining, while France and Canada are tied with 58 each. Japan, which saw a huge turnout at this year’s WSOP, still has 36 players in contention.

Feels like there will be a hell of an uphill battle to climb, as we already have strong communities on X, Discord and then there’s 2+2, and Reddit. But if anyone can do it, I am sure these guys can.

All is forgiven PokerGO. Many poker fans were surprised to learn that ESPN’s coverage of the WSOP Main Event isn’t free this year.

According to PokerNews, the ESPN App, which carries most of the early Main Event streams, costs between $12.99 and $29.99 per month. That didn’t sit well with some fans, who assumed the return of ESPN to poker meant a return to free broadcasts.

Omaha Productions, run by the Manning brothers, is handling production. Early rounds are only available via the ESPN App, while the final table will get cable airings on ESPN2 and ESPN. Some fans have even apologized to PokerGO for past complaints, now that ESPN’s paywall feels even steeper.

“I just want the game to grow,” said PokerNews Podcast co-host Mike Holtz, disappointed that the move could keep casual fans away.

The 2026 WSOP Main Event is officially fourth-largest in history.

The tournament ended up attracting 9,208 players and generating the prize pool in excess of $85,000,000!

Unbagging chips for Day 2 of the Main is always a good feeling, no matter the count.

And having an average stack to start the day is certainly nothing to sneeze at!

This is probably the chilliest Negreanu’s vlog of the series.

Daniel is taking it easy, relaxing for Day 2 of the Main Event. No hand breakdowns or poker action in this one – just a man taking a well-deserved break before getting back to the grind.

Mike Matusow, never one to shy away from controversy, caught a one-round penalty on Day 2 of the WSOP Main Event.

According to PokerNews, the infraction came after he exposed one of his hole cards during a heads-up pot with Steven Ross. Matusow seemed surprised, protesting, 'We’re heads up, we can do that,’ only to be quickly corrected by the table and the floor.

Matusow left the table with about 75,500 chips, roughly half the average stack, forced to watch the action from the rail. When he returned, he broke the news himself, calling the penalty 'kinda bullsh*t’ and claiming ignorance of the specific rule. Ross, his opponent in the hand, apologized: 'I had no idea, man. I’m sorry.’

Not Matusow’s first brush with WSOP penalties, but definitely one for the highlight reel.

BetRivers Poker just notched its best month yet, claiming a 10 percent share of the US online poker market in May.

That’s about $828,000 in revenue, up nearly $100,000 from April. The company hit all-time highs in both Pennsylvania and Michigan, even as the big three operators—WSOP, FanDuel, and BetMGM—continued to dominate with around 30 percent each.
