Daniel Negreanu has cast doubt on the future of Game of Gold.

The GGPoker ambassador recently took to Reddit for a candid “Ask Me Anything” session on the Poker subreddit and gave fans an unfiltered peek into his thoughts on poker, life, and even reality TV.

Naturally, one of the hottest questions was about Game of Gold, GGPoker’s hit poker reality show that took the community by storm a couple of years ago. The company has been largely silent about its sequel since then.

Negreanu, who played a prominent role in the first season, didn’t offer the news fans were hoping for. When asked whether a second season was on the horizon, Dnegs didn’t sugarcoat his answer.

“Unfortunately, I don’t see it happening, but who knows, that could change. I thought it was great stuff,” he admitted.

The comment came as a surprise, given that GGPoker had confirmed Season 2 back in November 2023. Since then, however, progress has stalled. Pokerfuse has repeatedly reached out to GGPoker for updates, but each time the response has been the same: no new information.

When Game of Gold premiered in November 2023, it was a breath of fresh air for poker content. Produced by GGPoker in collaboration with Poker After Dark, the show blended Survivor-style reality drama with high-stakes poker, offering fans a mix of strategy, competition, and entertainment that felt truly original.

The 12-episode series featured 16 professional players split into four teams, battling across multiple poker formats to rack up points. The eventual champion walked away with $456,000, but the real prize was how the show captured the imagination of poker fans worldwide. Episodes quickly amassed millions of views on YouTube, and the show even earned a GPI Award of Merit for the way it reignited conversation around televised poker.

In late 2023, Spunky Hwang, GGPoker Creative Director, Producer & Director of Game of Gold, confirmed in an exclusive to Pokerfuse that talks were already underway for Season 2. He hinted at “a lot more intensity with more uncertainties ahead” and expressed excitement at how much the community embraced the first season.

“We are very happy to hear that the community is enjoying the content as much as we enjoyed filming it. It was incredibly entertaining to watch all these players zoned in and giving their all to stay alive during the shoot,” Hwang, the force behind Game of Gold, told pokerfuse.

The Silence Continues

Yet nearly two years later, there has been nothing but silence—broken only by the occasional rumor or unverified comment.

The situation is puzzling, given the strong numbers and the renewed appetite for episodic poker programming. Other shows, such as PokerStars’ Big Game revival and the Mystery Cash Challenge, have been drawing impressive audiences online, proving there’s space for story-driven content alongside the traditional livestreams and highlight reels.

Some fans have speculated that production costs may be the stumbling block. Game of Gold was a high-quality production, and while its viewership was impressive, it may not have justified the budget in a strictly financial sense. On the other hand, GGPoker is the largest poker operator in the world, and many argue that the branding and goodwill generated by a hit series more than offset the costs.

That’s what makes Negreanu’s update sting. While he left the door cracked open with his “who knows, that could change” caveat, his words suggest that, at least for now, Season 2 isn’t on the horizon.

For fans, it’s bittersweet. Game of Gold proved that poker could be repackaged into compelling, binge-worthy entertainment—something the industry has long struggled to achieve. Ending after just one season would feel like a missed opportunity, especially at a time when poker content is enjoying a small renaissance.

Still, hope isn’t dead. If demand continues to grow and GGPoker sees the long-term branding value, the show could yet return. But for now, Negreanu’s comments temper expectations. Game of Gold may remain a one-season wonder—a bold experiment that reminded everyone just how fun and dramatic televised poker can be.
