Online poker is legal in Michigan and available to everyone physically present within state borders. All online poker operators in the state have to be licensed by the MGCB (Michigan Gaming Control Board). As of April 2022, Michigan is also a member of the MSIGA, an interstate compact allowing poker operators to combine players with other states in the compact.
As of 2023, there are three online poker rooms in Michigan — PokerStars Michigan, BetMGM Poker Michigan, and WSOP Michigan. The first room, PokerStars, went live in late January of 2021, and BetMGM Poker followed two months later. WSOP MI took a bit longer, launching almost exactly a year after BetMGM.
Michigan is the third US state where PokerStars has a presence. The other two are PokerStars NJ and PokerStars PA. At the start of 2023, PokerStars MI created a multi-state network with PokerStars MI and PokerStars NJ, bringing both player pools together. BetMGM, through its partner partypoker, is also live in New Jersey, but there is no cross-state player pooling yet.
PokerStars Michigan offers cash games, sit-and-go tournaments, and MTTs, so players can find a wealth of options across different stakes. To celebrate the launch in the new market in style, PokerStars organized the Michigan Championship of Online Poker (MICOOP), and the series was a resounding success.
The operator went from strength to strength, becoming the market leader in the state. It confirmed that position on January 1, 2023, creating a shared player pool with PokerStars NJ, guaranteeing even better player traffic and possibilities for larger tournament series with bigger guarantees.
PokerStars MI is easily the top choice for tournament players, featuring a rich schedule of daily and weekly events combined with regular series featuring big guaranteed prize pools.
As always, PokerStars offers state-of-the-art software equally fitting for recreational and serious players. In addition to its great design, the client offers a variety of customization options, allowing players to set things up just the way they like them. This includes options like table backgrounds, the four-color deck, customizing betting buttons, various filters for finding particular games and stakes, and much more.

WSOP MI was the last operator to join the regulated state market, but they came out strong, offering a big welcome bonus consisting of up to $100 in extra credits and a 100% match up to $1000, coming ahead of the other two rooms. This, combined with the new Poker 8 software platform and the fact that WSOP MI is able to offer events awarding WSOPC rings and gold bracelets gives the room a big advantage.
While WSOP MI is an attractive option for tournament players, it also offers solid cash game action. The new software is also very smooth and provides a quality gaming experience for players of all shapes and sizes.
It is also worth noting that the operator is quite generous with its frequent bonuses, promotions, and freerolls, giving players a chance to get their hands on a lot of extra value. True grinders will certainly find plenty of reason to play here and put in the required volume to unlock all these extra funds.

Run It Once Poker MI, powered by BetRivers, could be the next big poker site to launch in Michigan. Parent company Rush Street Interactive has partnered up with Phil Galfond, a well-known poker professional, to bring the cult-favorite RIO platform to the US market.
While there is no official information about where Run It Once poker will launch first, it is a fair assumption that the operator will seize the opportunity and get into several markets as quickly as possible. Michigan represents an ideal starting point for this as it is now a part of the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA), which means RIO could combine its player pools with operations in other MSIGA states, namely NJ, NV, and DE.
It also remains to be seen what features RIO Poker MI will offer to its players. Rush Street Interactive will use Galfond’s platform that used to cater to the ROW players before shutting down, which means an integrated HUD, the popular Splash the Pot promo, dynamic avatars, and many more of its innovative features} could all find their place on the new Michigan platform. We also expect some exciting changes to the platform as well.

MI poker players have a decadent selection of welcome bonuses available to them. It is hard to say which site offers the best bonus overall, as a lot of it boils down to what exactly you are looking for and your type of player.
For example, PokerStars MI features a rather generous offer for small-time players and those new to poker. You can get $100 worth of free Spin & Go tickets and casino funds by simply playing a single cash game hand at any stake. This can be a great way to kick-start your bankroll and practice your tournament play with very little risk. At the same time, the operator has a more traditional 100% bonus of up to $600 geared toward more serious players, and the best part is that you can claim both offers as a new player, making this welcome package quite valuable.
BetMGM Poker MI offers a rather generous 100% deposit match up to $1000, making the promotion attractive to serious grinders. You can also get up to $75 in MTT tickets, but those depositing a smaller amount will receive only $10 worth of tickets, making the bonus less appealing to recreational players with smaller budgets.
WSOP MI is currently the only site operating in the state to offer a no deposit bonus of $25, which makes it quite attractive to those new to online poker. You can also get another $25 in free funds after making the minimum deposit, so there is quite a bit of free money up for grabs. As for the deposit match bonus, it is as good as BetMGM’s, as it goes up to the maximum of $1000.

Michigan is home to three major poker operators, and all three of these try to cater to tournament players in the state in their own way. Depending on the type of player you are and what you are looking for, you might prefer one poker room over the other, but you are almost certain to find a good fit at one of them.
PokerStars MI is arguably the leader when it comes to real money online poker tournaments in Michigan. This comes as no surprise, seeing how PokerStars primarily built its reputation on a global scale, hosting some of the largest online events in the world.
Two of the operator’s staple series are the Michigan Championship of Online Poker (MICOOP) and the Spring Championship of Online Poker (MISCOOP).
With PokerStars combining its NJ and MI player pools, the operator has started using a different name — PokerStars US — instead of state-specific ones. With larger player pools, these tournaments have become even more attractive, offering more action and bigger prize pools.
Other than this, PokerStars MI has frequently hosted other, smaller series, such as the Fall Fest and the Winter Series.
WSOP Michigan has captured its fair share of the online tournament action in Michigan, focusing on its biggest advantage over the competition — the ability to award prestigious WSOP bracelets.
WSOP MI has regularly hosted online bracelet series, usually taking place simultaneously with the live iteration of the World Series in Las Vegas (June and July). Michigan poker players have a shot at over half a dozen bracelets every year, and we expect that number will increase with time, especially if WSOP combines its MI player pool with that of New Jersey and Nevada.
Players on the site also get to enjoy several online circuit events every year, where they have a chance to compete for large prize pools and WSOP rings — again, something that only this operator can offer in the US.
Beyond this, WSOP MI has also kept its finger on the market’s pulse, trying to cater to players’ expectations. The operator was the first to bring the increasingly popular Mystery Bounty format to the US.
BetMGM Poker MI is the smallest of the three operators in terms of player traffic, making it hard to organize big tournaments and promise large guarantees. However, they have emerged as a differential of sorts for the players looking for smaller, more manageable fields and softer competition.
The operator does not have such a fixed schedule for its big series, so it is somewhat harder for the players to plan ahead. Its major events seem to be concentrated around holidays, as we saw with the Winter Poker Championship.
Online poker finally went live in Michigan on January 29, 2021. The first site to offer legal real money online poker games in the state was PokerStars MI, which received all the necessary clearances from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).
Two months later, this was followed by the second market entrant, BetMGM MI Poker, which launched on March 22, 2021.
The latest operator to join the regulated MI market was WSOP MI, which dealt its first real money online poker hand on March 28, 2022.
The law legalizing online gambling and sports betting in Michigan was passed in December 2019, but it took a full year before the first sites were ready to accept players.
The twelve-odd months were spent figuring out all the details of licensing and setting up rules for the operators for the future. It was a fairly long wait, but residents of Michigan can now play online poker in a fully legal and regulated environment.
Online poker players in Michigan can take advantage of numerous bonuses and promotions to boost their bankrolls and improve their win rates on the felt. A majority of regulated MI poker rooms offer these types of bonuses in one way or another:
The most common type of online poker bonuses, welcome offers, are geared towards new players and are generally the most generous of all the promotions you will come across.
As a part of the welcome bonus, the operator will match the player’s deposit in full and sometimes even give you a bonus amount that exceeds the deposited sum. So, for example, if you deposit $200 with an MI poker room as a new player, you can expect to receive at least another $200 in bonus funds.
Sometimes, the bonus package will include additional perks like a small no-deposit bonus to try the room or some extra tournament tickets and freeroll entries on top of the cash match.
When it comes to cash bonuses, these are not added directly to your balance. Instead, they are locked away in your bonus account and released in increments as you play and generate rake. For example, a $200 bonus might be split into ten $20 increments, each one released when you generate a certain amount of rake or earn a certain number of points (which are different ways of tracking the same thing).
While new players may get the best benefits at MI poker rooms, existing customers also have plenty to look forward to. Sites like PokerStars MI and WSOP Mi frequently issue reload bonuses, giving you a chance to easily claim some extra funds on your next deposit.
These bonuses are very similar to welcome offers, with the biggest difference being they are not limited to new players. The maximum amount is usually somewhat smaller, although some of the best MI reload bonuses go as high as $500.
No matter what format of online poker you might enjoy, there are always some leaderboards and competitions happening at MI online poker sites that will match your preferences.
These leaderboards tend to award the players who put in the biggest volume during a certain period, playing qualifying games, but some of them also take results into account, so the most skillful players who also play a lot will reap the biggest rewards.
You will find leaderboards for MTTs, sit and goes, cash games, and many subtypes, and the best way to get value from these promotions is to get involved with the ones featuring your favorite format and put in some serious volume.
Finally, for the players who play a lot, loyalty programs at different poker sites can significantly improve their bottom line. These are generally designed to reward the players who play the most and generate the most rake, although there are many differences between the operators.
Finding the right loyalty program for your style and volume of play is very important. If you can do so successfully, you can expect some serious regular returns on top of your winnings at the tables.
In Michigan, like other regulated states, all poker operators have to adhere to strict laws and regulations regarding who can play on their sites and under what circumstances.
The first and most important point is that MI online poker is available to only those 21 years or older. All players are required to provide their SSN and relevant documents to confirm their age and identity.
You can register and start playing by providing your personal information, like full name, date of birth, address, and SSN. The software will cross-reference this information with the national database; if everything checks out, you can play.
However, when requesting your first withdrawal, you will also need to provide a photo of your government-issued ID. This is a one-time process; if everything checks out, you can deposit and withdraw in the future without any further complications.
At this point in time, all players who want to play on any sites offering legal online poker in Michigan must be physically present in the state.
The system does not work on a trust basis, i.e. you confirm you are in the state. Instead, there is geolocation software that you will have to allow to access your device to check your IP and other information. Only if the software can verify your physical presence in the state will you be able to play.
It is very hard to fool this system, and even if you are able to do it, it is not recommended. If any player is discovered to have played from an area outside of Michigan, they will have their funds confiscated, and they could potentially face even more serious ramifications.
It is important to note that you only have to be physically present in Michigan to actually place real money wagers or bets of any kind (poker, casino, or sports). You can register for an account and verify your identity from any US state as long as the operator allows it. Players only have to be in MI when actively playing real money games or tournaments.

Must be 21 or over and in Michigan to play. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem and wants help, call the MDHHS Gambling Disorder Help-line at 1-800-270-7117 or visit the MDHHS website.
Provided you meet the above criteria, i.e. you are physically within MI state borders, you should have no problems downloading the relevant software to your device. For the most part, the procedure does not differ from that of downloading any software.
First of all, visit the website of the operator you want to play with — either PokerStars MI, BetMGM Poker MI, or WSOP MI.
If you are playing from a desktop computer, find the download link or button on the site, click on it, and follow the procedure. Usually, it will only take a few clicks and a couple of minutes before the platform is up and running on your device.
For those wanting to play on their phones, you will need to download the relevant app, i.e. Android or iOS, which can also be done via the operator’s website or the relevant app store.
You may have to allow files from unknown locations when prompted by your phone. After a few seconds, you will download the .apk file. Run it, let the installation process complete, and you will be good to go.
Once you have downloaded the software, if you have not completed the registration before, you will be able to do so from the platform or app interface. It is important to note that you will not be able to access any functionalities of the software before you are fully registered and logged in.
Signing up with licensed and regulated poker sites in Michigan is easy, even if you have never played before. To get started, follow these simple steps:
The biggest thing setting legal online poker US operators apart from unlicensed offshore sites is the fact the former are fully licensed and operate under a very strict set of laws.
To make sure you are actually playing on a regulated site in Michigan, scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the logo of the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). If the site is licensed, it will clearly display the logo so that players know they are on a safe and regulated platform.
Of course, it is easy enough for anyone to slap any logo they want on their site. If you have any doubts, visit the MGCB official site and check out the licensing information. Type in the name of the operator you want to check, and if they are licensed, they will appear in the search results.
One of the most important requirements set forth by the MGCB is that all licensed operators must maintain a money reserve at all times in the amount that is enough to secure all the funds in the players’ accounts. Although this is technically not the same thing as segregated funds, it achieves the same purpose.
All players’ balances are covered at all times using one of several methods (cash, letter of credit, bond), so whatever happens, your money is safe.
If you feel like an operator has done something to violate your rights as a player or has not treated you fairly, you have a right to lodge a complaint. However, it is very important to follow the procedure here.
The first point of action is filing a written complaint with the operator. The operator must provide you with a written answer within 10 days. If you are not satisfied with the outcome, you can proceed to pursue the matter with the MGCB.
You can submit your complaint via an online form, but the MGCB will require you to include the answer you received from the operator. It will not take any action until you had first tried to resolve your issue with the casino, sportsbook, or poker room directly. If the player and the operator cannot come to a resolution, the MGCB will get involved and make the final decision.

Michigan poker players have access to a fair number of banking options. Most importantly, all these methods are completely safe and reliable, so you don’t have to worry about your personal information getting into the wrong hands or your money not reaching its intended destination.
As for the available options, this is one of those things that always change and develop, so if you do not see an option that works for you, this does not mean that it will not be added at some point in the future.
When it comes to banking, more is almost always better, as the more options there are, the easier it gets for everyone to fund their poker account in the most suitable and convenient manner.
While different MI poker sites support different methods, a majority of the operators recommended on our site will feature payment options listed below:
Method | Deposits | Withdrawals |
---|---|---|
Visa | Yes | No |
MasterCard | Yes | Yes |
PayPal | Yes | Yes |
Skrill | Yes | Yes |
NETELLER | Yes | Yes |
Wire Transfers | Yes | Yes |
Paysafecard | Yes | No |
Cash at the Cage | Yes | Yes |
Checks | No | Yes |
PokerStars MI, BetMGM MI, WSOP MI, as well as other operators that join the market, also enable deposits and withdrawals at their land-based casino partner. This is a very convenient and safe method if you happen to live nearby the casino or visit the area often.
Like in other states, credit and debit cards should not be your first choice. While these are perfectly legal options on any regulated poker site, banks seem slow to get the memo.
Many financial institutions in the US still block transactions to gambling sites, even the licensed ones. This should change in the future, but if you have other options, try them first. Credit cards are also not the best option as they only work one way — you can deposit with them, but you will need to use a different method to cash out.
Bet With Your Head, Not Over It.

Both players and operators in the States are looking forward to regulated poker sites combining their liquidity, bringing together player pools from different states. At this point in time, there is one such agreement — the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA) — between New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware, and Michigan, which joined MSIGA in May 2022.
This development was prefaced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer signing SB 91 bill into law on December 29, 2020, paving the way for future multi-state online poker agreements.
PokerStars MI became the first operator the Mitten State to take advantage of this new development. On January 1, 2023, the room created its first interstate network, joining forces with PokerStars NJ. This new compact allows players from the two states to compete at the same cash game tables and in the same tournaments across both clients.
In April of 2022, Michigan was accepted into the MSIGA with regulators from the original three states (NE, DE, and NJ) approving the application.
This was the first major development in interstate poker ever since New Jersey joined forces with Nevada and Delaware in 2017.
PokerStars became the first operator to take advantage of Michigan joining the MSIGA. After doing the preparatory work, the operator received the blessing from the state regulator and became the first MI online poker site to combine player pools across the state border.
PokerStars MI merged player pools with PokerStars NJ on Jan 1, 2023, a move that was important for players in both states, but more so for residents of New Jersey as it significantly boosted the active player pool they have access to. Thanks to its new combined NJ-MI platform, PokerStars has seen its traffic soar in the months since.
While PokerStars may have been the first, it surely won’t be the last. While both operators have been fairly tight-lipped about their plans or timeline, we fully expect BetMGM to link up its NJ & MI player pools soon. WSOP is also surely planning to connect its MI platform to its existing tri-state network, including WSOP NJ, WSOP NV, and the 888-powered racinos in Delaware.

Yes. In May 2022, Michigan entered the MSIGA, allowing operators in the state to start sharing liquidity with the other three states in the compact (DE, NV, and NJ).
PokerStars became the first operator to take advantage of this development, merging its Michigan player pool with that in New Jersey. As of Jan 1, 2023, players on PokerStars NJ and PokerStars MI can play together in a single combined player pool, having access to the same cash game tables and tournaments.
Yes. Sites offering legal online poker in Michigan are safe to play on. The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is in charge of vetting and licensing all online poker operators in the state. To receive a license, the operator must meet stringent requirements that guarantee the safety of the players and their funds and ensure the fairness and randomness of the games on offer.
Unlike offshore sites catering to US players, these licensed operators are culpable to the Michigan state regulator. If there are any problems or disputes, the MGCB will act as an intermediary and consider any player complaints to determine if any rules or procedures were broken.
No, online poker games in Michigan are not rigged. The MGCB oversees and regulates all online gambling operations in the state, including online poker.
