Community meetings held in each of the eight wards of Washington D.C. to discuss the controversial online gaming provisions have concluded without much fanfare.
Just prior to Black Friday, online gambling passed into law in the District. Included in the budget bill last December was the lottery services contract that legalized online games including Texas Hold’em, Blackjack, bingo and others.
As the program was set to be rolled out, the manner in which the law was passed drew controversy. The implementation was delayed on several occasions and public meetings were scheduled to gauge the reaction of the public. Critics claim that the topic has not received the appropriate public debate.
Upon conclusion of the investigation into the process by which online gaming was originally legalized, a hearing on the topic is set to be held at which it is expected that council member Jack Evans will introduce a bill to repeal online gambling in the district.
