- Along with event organizers GPI and Poker52 Europa, PokerStars and Lucien Barriere Hôtels are sponsoring the event.
- The main award is given to European player of the year, according to the GPI’s rankings.
- There are also awards given to poker staff and event organizers, and a lifetime achievement award.
- If Rettenmaier were to win it would be quite an accomplishment—the German pro won the award in 2013.
The 13th annual GPI European Poker Awards will this year be hosted in conjunction with PokerStars’ European Poker Tour when in stops in Deauville, France.
The awards ceremony, which celebrates the year’s live tournament successes among European players, will take place at the Casino Barriere on January 29, 2014.
The event is organized jointly by the Global Poker Index and French poker magazine Poker52 Europa. PokerStars and Lucien Barriere Hôtels are the event sponsors.
The main award is the European Player of the Year, which is based on the GPI’s points-scoring system. There are also awards given to Rookie of the Year, Best Tournament Performance, Europe’s Leading Lady, and Internet Player of the Year.
There are also awards given to poker staff and event organizers, and a lifetime achievement award. In 2012 Gus Hansen was presented this prestigious award for his live career successes.
Currently the highest European player in the rankings is Ole Schemion, though fellow German Marvin Rettenmaier is not far behind. If either win, it will be quite the accomplishment: Ole was nominated for Player of the Year last year—and Marvin won it.
Details on the awards ceremony and the nominations will be announced shortly.
