Phil Ivey claimed his ninth WSOP bracelet on Wednesday after triumphing in Event #3, the $2,200 Mixed Event, at the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific (APAC) at Melbourne, Australia’s Crown Casino.
The win moves Ivey into a fourth-place tie in career WSOP bracelets with the late Johnny Moss, trailing only the 10 each for Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan and the 13 currently claimed by career leader Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Ivey’s win in the mixed event—a format which combines several different poker games in repeating rotation—came at the midway point of the new APAC series, the first to offer official WSOP bracelets in the Southern Hemisphere.
Ivey began the final table of the 81-player tourney with a narrow lead, which he eventually parlayed into the win. Ivey and Daniel Negreanu were among those expected to vie for the title, though Negreanu was eliminated early, in fourth, following the ousting of Kevin Song in sixth and Rob Campbell in fifth.
After Graeme “Kiwi G” Putt exited in third, Ivey and eventual runner-up Brandon Wong dueled for the title. Wong held the chip lead for much of the day before being overtaking by Ivey, eventually losing the last of his chips in a 2-7 triple draw hand wherein Ivey stayed on a 10-high holding and Wong was unable to complete a better hand.
Ivey collected $51,480 for the win, with Wong pocketing $32,039 as the runner-up. Third-place Graeme Putt cashed for $22,427.
Ivey joined fellow Americans Bryan Piccioli and Jim Collopy as winners of the WSOP APAC’s first three events.
