The Team PokerStars-endorsed tournament pro Theo Jorgensen is recovering from gunshot wounds following an attempted robbery at his home on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Three armed men forced their way into Theo Jorgensen’s home late on Sunday evening, and demanded cash. Unhappy with the amount he had available, they shot him three times while his terrified wife looked on.
All the injuries were in his leg and Theo is expected to make a full physical recovery. He has been able to post a Facebook message to concerned supporters from his hospital bed.
He points out that he is a “cautious man” and had taken precautions against such a theft including installing alarms. He conceded that his efforts had “unfortunately proved not to be enough.”
Danish Police report that the assailants were English speaking men, one of whom was armed with a sub-machine gun.
A search by tracker dogs of the local area failed to turn up any evidence. Theo and his wife were able to provide the police with descriptions of the three men which will be widely circulated.
Theo is a well-known tournament player with over $2.4m in winnings including a WPT title in the 2010 WPT Grand Prix de Paris. In the same year he finished 30th in the WSOP Main Event.
Previously sponsored by Bet24, his increased public recognition led to him being selected as PokerStars Team Pro.
Crime, especially gun crime, is extremely rare in Denmark which is regularly ranked as one of the happiest, least corrupt and, per capita, richest countries in the world.
A year ago 2010 WSOP Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel suffered a similar experience when armed men burst into his Montreal home, physically assaulted him and stole his Champion’s bracelet together with thousands of dollars in cash.
