PokerStars has confirmed that it will continue to monitor the effects of a new indicator, enabled by default in the client since an update last week, which shows whether a player is playing from a mobile device.
Many poker players voiced their surprise at the new edition, which some consider a “fish finder,” highlighting the recreational players who are much more likely to be playing from a phone or tablet than a desktop machine.
“When deciding whether to implement the icon, PokerStars did consider the possibility of an impact on gameplay,” a PokerStars representative told pokerfuse. “It was our view that the potential impact was likely to be small, and further, players have the ability to turn off the icon if they wish.”
All players can disable the indicator from within the client, and mobile users can disable whether others can see their status. However, it is enabled by default.
“PokerStars introduced the icon to help make our players aware of the option to play on PokerStars on mobile devices, and it is doing a good job of that,” pokerfuse was informed. “The team will continue to monitor the situation and will adjust the default settings if and when appropriate.”
The assumption of many players is that high-volume players play almost exclusively on the desktop, where it is easier to multi-table, and where they can use third-party tools like HUDs, whereas mobile players will be predominantly more casual, and thus potentially weaker opposition.
