2022 is a big year for 888Poker, one of the leaders in the world of online poker, as it marks 20 years since the gaming giant initially launched back in 2002.
The operator kicked off the anniversary celebrations in style, launching the $1.5 million XL Winter Series in January and following that up with the $2 million Millions Superstorm in February and early March.
Now, 888Poker is launching a unique throwback poker tournament series as part of its 20th-anniversary celebration, dubbed the Retro Week.
Series | Total Advertised Gtd | Total Tournaments | Avg Gtd | Duration |
---|---|---|---|---|
XL Winter Series | $1,500,000 | 44 | $34,091 | January 16 – 31 |
Millions Superstorm | $2,000,000 | 30 | $66,667 | Feb 13 – March 8 |
Retro Week | $888,000 | 26 | $34,153 | March 20 – 27 |
The Retro Week, which launches on March 20, will offer more than $888.000 in guaranteed prizes and will feature many of the operator’s most popular poker tournaments from the last two decades.
The operator’s official website reads: “As part of our 20 Year Anniversary, we’re bringing you the most popular tournaments of the past, in a nostalgic one-week series: The Retro Week Series, with over $888,000 guaranteed!”
This means we can expect the return of the low stakes Fish ‘n Chips tournaments, along with special Daily Challenges, and the massive $215 Mega Deep which will act as the Series’ Main Event and feature $300,000 in guaranteed prizes.
For the most part, the Retro Week schedule will feature lower buy-in tournaments, with many $11, $22, and $33 events on the calendar.
The biggest buy-in of Retro Week — the $525 Whale — arrives on the final day, Sunday, March 27, along with the Series’ Main Event.
Aside from the Main Event, perhaps the most attractive tournaments are the Daily Challenges, with the initial $90 Sunday Challenge featuring a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool.
The schedule is completely dedicated to No-Limit Hold’em, the game of choice for most tournament pros and recreational players alike, with several different formats on the books, including the increasingly popular progressive knockout tournaments.
Twenty Years of 888Poker
Online poker itself has been around for just over two decades and a number of major online poker operators have recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.
Just last year, PokerStars ran a series of promotions to celebrate its 20 years in the industry, with the Big 20 Rewind being a similar series of fan favorite poker tournaments from over the years.
Another industry giant, partypoker completed its 20 years of operations in 2021, although the operator did not run any special promotions to mark it.
Now, 888Poker —which started out as Pacific Poker back in 2002 — is celebrating its 20 years of being one of the go-to online poker sites for players in a wide variety of markets around the world.
To help with the celebrations, 888 recently brought on British middleweight boxing champion Chris Eubank Jr. as a celebrity ambassador for the brand, although the exact way in which he will promote 888Poker is yet to be revealed.
888Poker remains one of the few online poker rooms from the old days that are still doing well in the modern market and growing along with the industry. Many others have not been able to do the same and have shut their doors over the years.
