Once a staple of the online poker experience, the text chat boxes which allowed players to chat freely have started to disappear.
US-facing offshore network Winning Poker Network (WPN), best known for its flagship skin Americas Cardroom (ACR), has become the latest operator to drop free chat in favor of an emoji-based canned chat approach. BetMGM Poker, another US-facing network, followed suit, ending text-based chat and allowing players to communicate solely via emojis in its Pennsylvania and Michigan clients. BetMGM Poker 's New Jersey client, where the operator has yet to update its software, still allows traditional chatting.
ACR dropped its free-chat box during an update in May, replacing it with a feature that allows players to select from a list of animated emojis. The operator announced the new features via its Twitter page.
