The State Championships is the largest online series in BetMGM Poker history. The momentum that we’ve experienced in the past three months has inspired us to push for new heights.
Leading sports betting and iGaming operator BetMGM has announced a new major poker series in three regulated US markets on its online poker platform. From September 15 to 25, 2022, the inaugural BetMGM Poker State Championships will take place in Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The series features 26 individual events with a total guarantee of more than $2 million, the largest to date for the brand in the online arena. Satellites will start on September 10, with buy-ins from as little as $5 up to $100. It is another significant step forward for BetMGM, with its most ambitious competition to date.
“This has been a transformational year for BetMGM Poker. Following a groundbreaking live event at ARIA in June, the State Championships is the largest online series in BetMGM Poker history. The momentum that we’ve experienced in the past three months has inspired us to push for new heights,” Luke Staudenmaier, Director of Poker at BetMGM, said in the official press release of the operator.
While the name perhaps hints more towards the live poker felt, the competition will take place on the BetMGM Poker app and desktop platform. As part of the schedule, four tournaments will feature a buy-in of $1,000 or higher, and that also includes a $2,500 High Roller on September 18. The flagship tournament of the series is the two-day 8-Max Championship on September 25, which features $600,000 in guarantees across the three states.
The much more affordable NLHE 8-Max Phase tournament comes with a buy-in of $100 and features flights every day during the tournament series. No direct buy-in for Phase 2 on the last day of the series is possible, as all qualifiers will compete for at least $100,000 in prize money in New Jersey, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
While many individual guarantees are identical or very similar, the most significant slice of the pie is guaranteed in The Garden State, followed by Michigan. Despite the lowest overall tally, the BetMGM Poker State Championship tournaments on the BetMGM Poker PA client still feature more than half a million in guaranteed prize money.

The name of the upcoming online poker contest very much resembles the first live poker event of the brand earlier in 2022. From June 23 to June 26, the BetMGM Poker Championship took place at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and surpassed its ambitious $1 million guarantee.
A few days ago, in late August, BetMGM concluded the Summer PKO Fest in MI, PA, and NJ which focused on the low- and mid-stakes players with buy-ins ranging from $20 to $215. Each tournament as part of the schedule featured the popular progressive knockout (PKO) format, and the stakes for the next contest will now be raised.
BetMGM has also successfully launched in Ontario in April 2022 and has since taken the lead in a hotly contested duel with PokerStars. The operator has now essentially teased its first tournament series in the regulated Ontario online poker market with the appearance of the “Ontario Poker Championships” tab in its BetMGM Poker client.
No further details have been made public yet, but they are expected soon. The upcoming competition will likely run at a similar time as its American rival and directly clash or overlap with PokerStars’ Ontario Championship of Online Poker (ONCOOP).
All signs point toward an increased online presence by the BetMGM brand, which is also eying further expansion in the regulated US markets soon.
