Play Tight, but Don’t Be Afraid to Go for It
One characteristic of almost any freeroll poker tournament out there is that things tend to be wild for the first few levels. There are always some players who are there to try and build a massive stack quickly or bust, and you’ll see these players moving all in every hand and creating mayhem at the tables.
The best tip we can give you is to play smart poker, avoid getting tilted by this behavior, and simply wait for your opportunities.
You’ll want to play tight and avoid speculative hands, but if you pick up a premium like a big pocket pair or a hand like AK or even AQ, don’t be afraid to put your chips in the middle against these players. You’ll be a big favorite against their two random cards and put yourself in a position to build a big stack, which will come in handy later.

Forget About Bluffing Early On
Calling ranges in a freeroll will be much wider than what you’d encounter in a regular tournament where people had to cover their buy-ins. This means that your opponents will often be happy to look you up with a bottom pair all the way to the showdown during the early stages.
Their strategy is simple — they are hoping to pick off bluffs and build a stack, and if they can’t do it, they don’t mind busting.
The best way to counter this is — well, don’t bluff! It doesn’t matter how well-constructed your bluff might be and how much you think it makes sense. If your opponent is intent on catching you with your hand in a cookie jar, simply don’t give them the opportunity.
Instead, play your big hands fast and build large pots with bets and raises. Since your opponents don’t know your game plan, they might look you up and allow you to pick up some easy chips.
Turn the Aggression On Near the Bubble
The whole wild and crazy mentality of a freeroll tends to change as the money bubble approaches. Most players, including those who’ve been keeping their pedal to the metal the entire time, will tone things down to ensure they get past the bubble.
This is the time when you can start applying pressure to some shorter stacks who’ll be reluctant to bust after playing for several hours and so close to having something to show for their efforts.
You can pick up some easy chips during this period if you have a workable stack, so pay close attention to it. There is no telling how long the bubble stage might last, so you want to get the most value you can as quickly as you can.
