Online poker site PokerStars will look to set a new world record for the largest online poker tournament. It hopes to attract 230,000 players to compete in a single online tournament for a guaranteed $300,000.
On February 23, staring at 13:00ET, the online giant will host the $1 event on its dot-com poker room, offering a $25,000 first place prize to whoever manages to outlast the giant field. $275,000 to be shared by the next 60,000 runners.
Even though the tournament buy-in is a very manageable $1, PokerStars is still making it even easier to get your ticket by offering a variety of satellites and promotions to grab a free ticket, while hoping to attract new and repeat depositors. Accounts that opt to make a deposit of $10 or more can use a special bonus code to grab a free ticket to the tournament; new players to the site can also score a ticket, and an extra $20, with a separate code.
As an additional incentive, PokerStars is looking to make the tournament a matter of national pride. As sports fans around the world celebrate the top tier athletes of their country in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, PokerStars wants players to be representatives for their country in this world record attempt. With their limited time custom-made avatars, players can choose their countries’ flag as their own avatar for the month of February.
A cap on entrants at 230,000, thus assuring an overlay of $70,000, is likely incentive enough to attract the requisite players. The poker room had no difficulty hitting 225,000, the current record, back in June 2013. In December 2011, when it hit a 200k record, the registration cap was met over three hours before the tournament commenced.
