PokerStars’ attempt to beat its own world record for largest poker tournament fell short on Sunday.
When registration closed in the early afternoon on Sunday, 211,619 players had registered $1 to play the special “Guinness World Record Attempt” tournament. The online poker room was looking to beat its own world record of 225,000 registrations which it set in June 2013.
PokerStars capped the number of registrations of the fee-free tournament at 230,000 and guaranteed a $300,000 prize pool, ensuring that, even if the record was hit, players would enjoy a sizeable overlay. It was also giving away tickets to any player that deposited $10 using a special bonus code.
Despite such favorable conditions, it was not enough. Registrations fell 6% short of the world record.
The fast-structure tournament ran for just four hours. The top 60,000 places paid—just under 30% of the entrants—with just over 30,000 getting a min-cash win of $2. Ultimately it was Dal2009 from Germany who outlasted 211,618 other players for the first place prize of $25,000.
All eyes are now on next Sunday, when PokerStars has guaranteed an $8 million prize pool for its 8th anniversary Sunday Million.
