The Deep South has traditionally been hostile to gambling, but attitudes appear to be softening in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi — with legislation to expand gaming advancing in all three socially conservative states.
Should the legislation that’s been advancing since late January make it across the finish line, Alabama will finally have a state lottery. It will also have mobile and retail sportsbooks, land-based casinos, and a tribal gaming compact.
Georgia is in line to get mobile sports betting, but has taken a hard pass on retail sportsbooks. Meanwhile, Mississippi aims to add mobile sports betting to its list of gaming options.
