Newly crowned “Player of the Decade”, Daniel Negreanu, has dropped to second place on the Global Poker Index (GPI) ranking of tournament players. German player Ole Schemion is the new number one.
Schemion’s 7th place finish in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) Super High Roller earned him $277k and a return to the top of the rankings. He was number one for a week in mid-October.
Negreanu is now number two, but his latest video blog suggests that he will work hard to regain his lead.
The PCA Super High Roller was also good news for Vanessa Selbst. Her third place finish for $760k pushed her up two places higher to fifth position in GPI’s rankings.
The GPI tournament rankings have rapidly expanded in popularity as owner Alexandre Dreyfus implements a strategy to provide poker fans with the sort of information that football and baseball fans have come to expect and which adds greatly to their enjoyment of the game.
The GPI website explains its ranking methodology: “Players are ranked weekly based on their performance by finishing in cash positions in qualifying tournaments occurring over the previous 36 month period.” The GPI score multiplied by an “Aging Factor” equals a player’s index points.
GPI, which also owns the Hendon Mob recently signed a data sharing deal with PocketFives so that readers on the respective websites can access live and online tournament results for their favourite players.
