Caesars has received permits for two of its casinos in New Jersey, allowing it to operate online gaming in the state. The “soft launch” is scheduled to start tomorrow.
The decision from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) followed a public hearing in which Caesars Interactive Entertainment CEO Mitch Garber appeared in person to field questions over the company’s and his own suitability.
Two of Caesars Entertainment’s properties—Caesars’ and Bally’s—have received permits. Harrah’s and Showboat are not currently listed as having received permits. Caesars will launch a WSOP-branded online poker room, as they have done in Nevada, using 888's software for online poker and casino games.
888 Holdings will also operate its own online gaming offerings—including its own-branded poker room—in conjunction with Caesars. Wynn is also tipped to offer online games through Caesars and join 888’s All American Poker Network, although this partnership has yet to receive a transactional waiver.
To offer online gaming in New Jersey this month, an operator must receive a transactional waiver—a temporary thumbs-up while licenses are formally processed—and form a partnership with a permitted casino.
Counting Caesars’ two, there are now seven casinos permitted to offer online gaming: The previous five already approved are two Trump properties, Tropicana, The Borgata and Golden Nugget.
Two of Caesars’, and three more AC casinos remain off the list. One is Resorts, which has partnered with PokerStars for online gaming. The operator also still awaits a transaction waiver. The other two, Revel and the Atlantic Club, are suffering from financial difficulties and are not tipped to be involved in online gaming at the start.
Online gaming is scheduled to officially open next Tuesday, November 26. An invite-only soft launch period will kick off tomorrow, starting with an eight-hour test period on Thursday and Friday, expanding to longer periods over the weekend.
Update: The article originally stated that all four casino licenses are expected to receive permits. Following publication, the permits list was released. The article was updated to reflect this change.
